This same issue happened with our Jetta, fortunately for us it was still under warranty and the VW garage replaced it. The VW state manager got involved as he was at the dealer at the time I dropped in to see them about it. No surprise that 'they'd never seen it happen before'. I would mention it to your local dealer just to see what they say as it's not like you've caused it. Seeing you are at Acacia Ridge then I guess Highway Auto are your local which is where I took ours. If they say it's never been seen before then you can call bull on them. I can give you the rego number of our old Jetta as they'd have the repair on file.

Apparently this has happened to quite a few in the US. Not sure if it is year related or just "luck of the draw" though. First stop would be check what the dealer can do for you, and if they can't/won't help, check out an auto upholsterer.

It's becoming very common. I took it up with VW and told them how disappointed I was with this happening in a 'quality' car that was just five years old and had been very carefully maintained by one owner (me!) since new. After a dealer inspection, I was offered a 25% deal by VWA - they paid for half the hood lining while I had to pay for the other half PLUS the installation.

I made it clear I expected more than that as it was clearly a manufacturing fault. The dealer gave me an email address for a guy at VWA. I sent off a message outlining the situation but did not receive a reply. After a few weeks passed, I sent an email to the MD of VWA. One of her underlings left a message on my mobile the next day saying that the offer was only open for 30 days and it had now been withdrawn. Of course, I had never been informed the offer was time conditional.

I will have the lining replaced by a local trimmer in the next few weeks and then probably get rid of the Jetta. My original intention was to buy a new Toureg when I retire later this year but, I will never own a VW again unless there are some massive changes in VWA's management and corporate culture.

So many complants about VWA coming up. I think their profits are slim, manufacturing issues asside, they are supporting a sometimes poor product, poorly.

If VWA can't make selling VW's a profitable exercise with high margins on parts and servicing, they need to have a look at how they do business.

Sorry for semi-off-tangent rant but there are a growing number of under satisfied VW owners who are likely to avoid the brand in the future (I'm fine with mine, but am concerned with the quality of many newer models).

labour is about right...its a crappy job as its a jetta and has them flappy bits at the back window.. you need the seats out and rear door panel and b pillar trim off to get the bloody thing out the LHR door!..golf is a lot easier....VDUB...

Checked on cost of hoodlining retail $700.00 minus my 50% parts =$350.00 means that the labour cost is $172.50per hr =$691.00 in labour

For what it's worth, the official guide I use quotes 4.5hr headlining remove and install (4.8hr with sunroof), so they are well within reason there.
That said, I have never taken longer than about 2-2.5 hours to get ANY headliner in and out, including a couple Jettas.
They are definitely a fiddly one to get out though. I'd be going through your dealer anyway because they are very easy to get wrong.

Also, they might be quoting "group time" with their labour rates, as a second set of hands is sometimes easier
