Economy at cruising speed

All I'm saying is that we found a flat and straight bit of road 17.2 klm long ....and the MFD showed 7.0 - 7.2 at 160kph No pics as hands were on the wheel. That woulds get us from Perth to Adelaide in 12.5 hrs using 140l of diesel. Just need to make the tank about 2.5 times bigger

Yep that sounds pretty alright. The R does ridiculous economy in the burbs and when you hammer it. But stick in 6th on the highway and cruise and drops down to around 9L/100km. Gives me a cruising range from less than 300km to nearly 700km

My GTi DSG averages approx 6.7 L/100km on my way to work in the morning where the traffic limits my right foot and I cruise along at between 80 & 100kmh. On my way home I usually average only 9.5 to 10 L/100km as I get the chance to give it a bit more of a squirt.
On a trip out of the city I usually average anywhere from 7 to 9 L/100km depending on where and how fast I drive.

Is that observing your trip computer? I never rely on trip computer readings. Our GTI averages around 9-10l/100km around town on Ultimate or V-Power 100, which includes climbs up Henri Robert Drive Mt Tamborine (and wife occasionally racing other GTIs/R32s) each day, and on a nice relaxing trip it will do about 7.5l/100km. These figures are calculated on trip meter distance versus refuel litres.

THat's for sure - best I've seen on a Sydney-Brisbane trip was 8.5L per 100KM in the R.

But that was a middle of the night no need for overtaking whack it in sixth and cruise effort....

Redbook quotes 16.4L/100km but my last 100 hours of driving had it just under 14.5L/100km. That had a few 150km trips up the coast for work as well.
My current overall average since I got the car (yes I've kept track) is 14.67L/100km and that's worked out from kms and fillups as opposed to the computer. Keep in mind though this is the MkIV. I don't know if the MkV is any better (or worse for that matter).

The Mk3 VR6 does 12.6 as an average and a 100 odd km drive today down the freeway sitting on 120 had it down to 7.8L/100km (for the trip) which is pretty good from the VR engine. Instantaneous would have been even lower which goes to show it "could" be efficient if I wasn't such a leadfoot

Mate, how do you drive that car? mine averages 13L/100km half of the time with the aircon on. And i dont drive it gently. if im not using the aircon it goes down to 12.5. I noticed that since i got the cAI installed consumtion went down almost a litre! Really happy about it!!

I actually think it runs a bit rich. Looking at the pipes after a few months they gunk up a fair bit. I also run it on V-Power which looking at the discussion over in the fuels and lubricant section seems to be copping a hiding.
CAI sounds like a good idea, my fuel economy is only marginally worse than yours if you didn't have one. I'm probably 80% city urban driving as well so it's constantly stop start traffic.
At the end of the day these are all excuses, I do like to give it quite a reasonable go on quite a regular basis.

Edit: I also forgot to blame the weather too. Surely the humidity has something to do with it as well. :p
