  • GTi has too much torque?

Hi everyone. Been lurking around the forums for a while now and just recently decided to buy myself a GTi.

I went for a test drive at the dealership today (07 model DSG GTi) and it was amazing. Having been driving nothing but Toyotas, the responsiveness and the power this little car generates was simply amazing.

However, I did find something puzzling as I have never read about it anywhere before. The car seems to be slipping alittle under hard acceleration when both myself and the salesman was driving it. It kept making squeaking sounds that got me worried. Has anyone encountered this?

Also, what kind of prices should I be expecting if I want a 3door, bi-xeon, DSG, leather and sat-nav?

Thank you all for your help!

What do you mean by slipping/squeaking? I know on my Dad's GTI if you plant it right off the line the traction control struggles a bit to keep the front wheels in check.
Also when we took the test car for a drive it had some squeaks and groans in the interior. Obviously it had had a pretty hard life (it was basically thrashed every day). However nearly a year on my Dad has no complaints (aside from it doesn't sound as good as my car). :p
Price wise, I'd work out the rrp for all those options first and then go to each of the VWs dealerships for a quote and then start pitting them against each other.
      Cheers

may as well add a sunroof to that as most of the ones with that amount of extras just come with the lot, and you'll get it thrown in for not much more. all that plus a sunroof dont pay more than 45k on road. just demand it and be ready to sign on the spot. walk out if they dont give it to you, they'll soon change their mind. remember, optoins like leather sunroof satnav etc etc dont cost the dealership much at all, its just easy money for them.

as for the funny noise... could that be the tyres struggling for grip? lol that means its accelerating fast and its a good thing. if you want a car thats not fast enough to skid the tyres then maybe consider the gt tsi, its a few grand cheaper too.

try to get an my08 as it has a bigger dash display and an mp3 compatible cd player.

oh and one last thing...w elcome to the forum

Are you serious? I found the dealers were not at all keen to haggle and couldn't get much off at all.

theres a thread on here about what ppl have paid for their gti's and 45k for a fully optioned gti is cheap... very cheap... but still realistic.

Thats what I thought about the skidding noise. It did sound like the tyre wasn't gripping well thus skidding, but when I was at the wheel the car didn't feel like it was slipping at all (albeit the sound did come on when I pushed the accelerator encouragingly). So I guess my question is whether one can expect this to happen to their car in normal, non-dealer-thrashed conditions.

I know on my Dad's GTI if you plant it right off the line the traction control struggles a bit to keep the front wheels in check.
From what Trent has said, it does seem like the GTi produces alot of torque that the front wheels are having alittle trouble transferring to the road? Does this happen in later gears? If it only happens at start-up, then for such a beastly engine!

As to the price, the dealer I went to weren't interested in doing business at all. Basically gave me the base price and just added the RRP on top of the base price.

if you plant the foot from the line, unless you fit drag slick tyres, you're gonna have wheel skid. if you accelerate more sedately then obviously you wont. on my gt my wheels are on the edge of traction squeeling till 70km/h. i would guess the gti would be somewhat similar. this is a good thing it means you car is fast i'm not sure what you mean by dealer thrashed conditions but the best way to run in your engine is to wait till it warms up and hten drive it as hard as you can while not hitting redline. helps seal the rings and the car will have more power and rev free-er later in its life. if you're worried about not getting power to the ground then consider the r32, i guarantee you wont be able to skid the wheels in a straight line

If it is normally a 'spirited start', than I'd say this is tyre friction being overcome by the dollop of torque. Especially with the DSG, it seems to hesitate than give you it all at once.

This is a car/driver relationship and you'll soon work out the point of traction loss. This car is not heavily controlled, so it doesn't bog down at the start through ecu adjustments. I found the new tyres took a little bit of time to wear in. So new tyres will slip more.

I'd say, that would be a very rare meeting of points to get that price, you must be a great haggler or a luck s.o.b. When I was buying, dealers weren't much interested, even if you did walk out the door.

I think the OP is too used to boring, bland and gutless Toyotas! Once you're converted, just like my wife from a Corolla Ultima ZZE-122R auto to a 3 door GTI DSG, you'll be hooked for life! My wife says she can hardly wait for the MKVI GTI now - 180+ kW, there'll be some serious torque there, I bet!

I've had my GTI for over two months now. I've had about three occasions where I have had the noise your talking about. It's just the wheel skid from fast accelleration off the mark. It's only a split second thing, and traction control takes over. I've never lost grip from it or anything so I wouldn't be concerned. I'm sure all performace cars do the same thing, some go sideways

You must be out of your mind! Factory options like Sat Nav, Leather and Sunroof are not easy or cheap options for the dealers - I think you're getting confused with dealer options like Tint, floormats ect. There's no chance of anyone getting a 3 door GTi, with DSG, BiXenons, Leather, Sat Nav and Sunroof for $45,000 drive away - do the math

                        3 Door GTi - $38,490
                        DSG - $2,300
                        BiXenos - $1,890
                        Leather - $2,990
                        Sat Nav - $2,990
                        Sunroof - $1,890
On Road Costs - $3000 Approx

                        TOTAL - $53,550

At the moment the demand for a GTi is so high that dealers don't need to go offering bargain prices to try and make a sale -

From memory I think my Dad's GTI rrp was just under $55k on the road. I'm not sure how much he ended up paying but I know it was under 50k. Probably around the $48k-$49k mark. He picked it up in April/May last year. His wait was around 3-4 months for the car. I'd say the delivery times have dropped now?
                            His specs:
                            - White 5 Door
                            - DSG
                            - Leather
                            - Sunroof
                            - Parksensors
                            - Dealer Tint (ridiculously expensive don't bother, but it is a damn good tint though)

As for the power torque of the car. I present a graph:

                            Graph from here.

As can be seen from graph Golf GTI = Awesome
