The prices of new cars have bored me but this one is worth the ready. It's interesting to hear what people have paid....

I'll ask my car consultant and let you guys know. He charges $300. Mind you my passat was over 53k and I paid $46200 drive away - direct from a dealer. Mind you VW gave me a nice fleet discount, do they do fleet discounts on the GTI?

I have a GTI CW 5 door with leather, sunroof, ipod adapter and top of the line tint for 44,300 drive out. The national fleey discount was around 3700(before gst) and then they also reduced the dealer delivery to $900 (From $1900). Hence, I have saved around 5K. Their National Fleet discount is genuine, unlike many other manufacturers where a private buyer can get almost down to National fleet price if they negotiate well.

I spoke to two dealers (North of Sydney). I don't believe I would have done much better than $1500-$2500 discount without national fleet. If I Could even get that much.

Incidentally, until I learnt that my company quallified for National Fleet, and the VW dealers were talking no discount, I actually had resigned myself to buying an Focus XR5 as I could get leather, reverse sensors and tint for 40K drive out against $48,-49K for the golf. Don't get me wrong, I love the golf, but I was not going to pay that much more for it! I Was very excited when national fleet was confirmed!

Now I can't wait - Maybe a week to go????

Normally I would suggest playing the dealers really hard on price but I think when negotiating with VW dealers (where the GTI's are selling themselves) they will loose interest in you knowing they can sell it elsewhere. So a little tact will definitely be required.

Good luck! Remember - Its your money! Make sure you drive everything that is in a similar class whenever you buy a car. Everyone has different tastes. Decide what you think is "Best Value" for your requirements.

Don't forget to let people know how you go! Your skills may assist someone else.

              couldn't agree more with above.

The GTI sells it self. The dealer knows this, they don't need to give out a big discount...which sucks cos who dosn't like a good bargain.

you can get a discount. just not an unreasonable one.

ive posted it in a dozen threads already but i paid 44.5k for a 3 door candy white manual with xenons and leather. thats about 3.5k off the standard price at the time.

You dont need to ask for a discount so much. just refuse to pay dealer delivery.

christ keep your pants on all i said was that extras dont cost the dealer much and that it gives you much more leverage with the price. the 45k i said was just based on (as i said in every post ive made here) prices other people have paid for specced out gti's. i personally dont give a flying fart if you're dumb enuogh to pay more than you had to for your gti.

Tim's right. Why pay for them to wash your car - quite poorly I might add. Play one dealer against the other, even try a bit out of town. Sometimes for the cost of a tank of gas you may get a decent discount. Also, if you're game, some demos are ok, just take it for a longish drive first, and get them to sort out any gripes. Fact is, only pick it up when you're happy. At the end of the day, they're selling the car, you have the money - You can get a car anywhere else, but when the money's gone...n:

They (VW Aust) actually do fleet discounts if you belong to a professional organisation, in my case the Australian Dental Association. Bring that up in conversation, and see where it leads you. My rep actually ASKED ME FIRST so he could see how much better off I'd be with a new fully-specced version vs my demo version (No leather no sunroof, but gps). Demo gave them more room to move on price, though.

Dealer delivery isnt just a charge for washing your car lol.

It goes towards covering shipping costs, compliancing costs, trucking costs, pre-delivery costs and then a detail.

When a car arrives at the dealership from pre-delivery im never completely satisfied with the cleanliness or the overall finish. Soo as a result ill get the gold class wax out and remove any remaining glue marks on the paint. Make sure its looking smick. Give it a clean over inside and out then lock it up inside the showroom.

But fair go, you should see the condition of some cars when they arrive off a truck. Disgusting, filthy, covered in dead bugs, mud and dirt..
Some panels are covered in plastic, when this plastic is peeled off there are glue lines off the edges all over some panels.

Its not like they charge you 1,990 dealer delivery to just hose your car, rub it down with a sponge and soapy water then chamois it.

I bought my GTi in August 07 off a mate who is a dealer.

                            08 Candy White 3 door
                            DSG

                            Sunroof
                            iPod adaptor
                            $46,700 on the road.

I waited 5 months for it. I can't see any dealer in the world discounting a car that has a 5 month wait unless you know them personally.

Funny but i just posted on golfmkv on similar topic.

I got my MY07 CW 5dr DSG + tint for $37k driveaway finance with corporate discount. Mind you this is excluding GST as it's a lease and i don't have to pay it until i sell the car. I didn't want to wait for months for MY08 and they had MY07 new on the show floor so just went with it. Prob why the price was cheaper. The dealer who quoted the price was in Mascot i think. The lease company did all the haggling which was nice.

Anyway have got stage 1 from APR and is running along nicely despite some rattles. Have just completed a 2,500km trip down the south coast to melb and back. Acceleration on overtaking was scary on a few occasions! >.<
