So has anyone done this? replace the rear suitcase muffler with a Varex on thier gti? Am considering it as a nice easy way to get a good note, with the flexability to shut it up when wanted??? What do you guys think?
Well a nice update to this thread, I took the plunge and fitted a Varex. Got my hands on an oval 3inch in to 3 inch out, removed the suitcase & center mufflers, then went from the slip joint back, all in 3 inch stainless. Thought it would be too loud taking out both mufflers but with the Varex full open it's a sweet deep sound, little bit of burble on overrun and a pop on flat changes (Manual). Most important, NO DRONE. when cruising it almost sounds stock. Then, close the varex to the 3/4 point and it's quieter than stock but no perceivable loss in performance. I will monitor fuel trims and CEL's but all looks good so far! I will do a video and put it on you tube soon, will post a link here. If any one wants the same, the guy that did it for me is happy to look after forum members, he is based in Hampton Park, Vic. PM me for his details.
is there any extra performance, considering the size of the rear muffler and the baffled resonator. my son removed his resonator only, and the drone is horrible
Not sure about performance, haven't had a dyno run, feels like it spools up a little earlier but the two cats are still there along with the original suffocating dump so wouldn't think there is much. Sound wise is sweet, tiny bit of drone at 1100 RPM to 1300RPM but once above that it's all good. When you want it quiet, press the button and it's the same sound as stock.
Hey Andrew, I went and saw Scott and he did my exhaust system too. Its not fully complete but its almost done. Im doing a 2.5" system instead of 3". The varex mid muffler was able to fit perfeclty exqctly in the middle under the car. No clearance issues either.
