I'm now going to go and ring around and see who was a GTI in stock I can drive. I also think i will call the dealer and let them know I'm not going ahead until I get more info as I do think they are taking me for a ride...

          • I have $36000 to spent on a GTI what year should that money buy me in NSW. I really want leather and DSG. Is the 3 door built in Germany proven to be any better build quality than the 5 door?

For $36,000, you should be able to get a 2006/2007 with DSG, leather, possibly even a sunroof. I remember reading about issues with 2005 GTI's.

                • June 30: How good is $22k for a '06 Jetta TDI?

I'm interested in feedback (PM re. your trade-in) or reply generally about the depreciating value of '06 MK V Golf/Jetta models as the approach the end of their 3yr warranty.

I can see a few cars in the $21-22k asking price range, still (barely) in warranty, with 2.0 TDI engine. There's a black Comfortline Golf manual at a dealer and a Jetta DG privately. Redbook says $18k trade-in or $22k private sale.

With the EOFY could VW & Audi (&other) dealers have a glut of trades, which might mean I'll do better?

From reading the forums, I'm thinking that getting a good price is a matter of timing and luck and if it's worth waiting longer, that's also fine with me.

From reading reviews and some forums, it would seem the Golf TDIs trade off the GTI mystique (somewhat) and the Jetta might be more car for the same money.

Do you have any experience of the current market, in buying or selling '06 MK5 Veedubs?

                  Cheers,
                  Bizi

[PS if you're one of the many Mk5 owners driving down Pennant Hills Rd in Sydney's north, there's a coffee or two at my place if you care to have a chat about your Mk5 experience to this newbie. ]

                    • Hello all,
Just picked up a 08 Black GTI 5 door with MFD2 Sat, DSG, Sunroof, Leather, Ipod adaptor,Parking sensors with 23k for $39k. Bought it from Barloworld in Mascot, I am from Adelaide. I looked for ages and just could not find one with the options that I wanted, and it had to be black. I test drove 2 in Adelaide from Solitaire, A Blue one 2008 model 5 door DSG no other options. They were asking $43k with 16k. Before I could make a decision (which was no anyway) it sold,. Then a 2006 white with satnav and leather came in. Aking $34k with 36k km's. By the time I could say no, it sold. I went through all the car sales sites and by the time I was into the features I wanted I was well into the $40k mark. Some may think too much, I think I dont care, I just love driving it. Its only been 4 days and just came back via Canberra and Melbourne. 2000km's of the best drivingexperience I have ever had. I recently sold my 2000 Audi TT Quattro (got too small in the rear for the kids) and I think I like the Golf more. Only because its so much easier to drive through the city to work, and is still fun out on the highway. Althoug the TT was brilliant on the windy roads. I actually sold the Audi for a 2000 BMW 328ci. I just hated it, only kept it for 3 months. Golf is so much nicer and lots more fun.

                      • Old thread, hope people still interested.
I have been offered a new mark v Golf GTi 2 door, dsg, leather for $42,600 drive away, no more to pay. Or a new Golf mark 5 GTi 4 door, dsg, leather, for $43,700 drive away, no more to pay. Waiting for the next GTi is not an option, but personally I don't think these are great prices. Any thoughts ? I'm in Melbourne (where everything is dearer !).

What I found is that these cars are holding their value quite well. There is still a strong demand for them. Considering that a Mk6 GTI will start at around $41,990 for a 6spd 3 door and I believe the 5 door DSG will set you back 44,990. Then add the options and a car optioned the same way as mine will get close to $57k. And then there will be the wait. However the new 2 door you mentioned is pretty close to recommended retail price (about a $2000 price reduction, same as the 5 door). Go through carsales and find a demo or 1 yo car for quite a bit less.

                          • Yes, I thought that's not much different to RRP prices, but it does include all on road costs, dealer delivery, 12 months rego and third party etc. I wonder, now that there are only 50 or 60 GTi's left, and no new model available, if they are playing hard ball ?

Re Golf VI GTi prices, the salesman was of the opinion that it would be the same or slightly less than the mark V , and a fair bit less than now for a fully optioned model (depending on the $AUD). Have to compete with other sports hatches, most of which are cheaper eg Focus XR-5 (and more powerful). In Europe, the GTi was released without price rise. I read somewhere the mark 5 was over-engineered, with way too many parts, and the mark vi does the same job with fewer parts, so less cost to build. I have to get a car now so I'm not going to wait, even though I'm realistically buying a 12 month old "new" car (which leads me to my next question) , and that resale takes a hit when a new model is released.

I comfort myself with the fact that I like the look of the old model better, and the old model is as quick to 100km/h (DSG), and actually has quicker times in the real world, from 60-80, 80-100 etc.

When I bought mine in May as above I was offered a blue 3 door dsg with leather for $40,400 drive away or a 5 door black with leather/DSG for $40,900 drive away.
I went with a silver 3 door dsg for $37,500.
