Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The smell actually comes from underneath the steering wheel, mainly on the right hand side under that little compartment etc.
You did not step in anything and leave a skid mark on you floor mats?

Other than electrical up under there... maybe you are doing skids drifto style and your fast wheel action is heating up the steering column lube and thats the smell.
    [/funnies]

To get an engine smell on RHS of car, maybe your Access panel to under dash electronics under the windscreen is not sealed correctly -
but then if thats the case you drivers carpet probably would be wet as well.

Haha no I didn't step on anything

This is a very distinct smell, the same that comes from the exhaust however a bit stronger/burnt-er haha.

And yes, from the right hand side under dash.

If i pop the bonnet, the smell comes from the same location.
So if i am facing the car. Back left of the engine, near the turbo etc.
      The same smell.

there's an access panel under the windscreen wipers and the black plastic trim.

that's your most likely entry source into the cabin on that side of the car.

In case you still have the smell problem- Had a slight oil leak from the turbo oil drain pipe where it goes into the engine which caused a similar problem. Took some months to locate, nipped up the nut a bit, all gone away.

Have you got a picture of where this is and how to tell?
