  • Weird burnt smell?

    Hi guys,

    The old question again..
Lately, quite randomly, on some spirited drives.
I have had a strange smell come in to the cabin, its kind of like a burnt diesel smell (ie more of a smokey diesel smell).

If i pop the hood, its quite noticle, and seems to be come from back near the turbo.

    Should I be concerned?

    :S

    thanks, again

Id get it checked for an exhaust leak

if your exhaust is cracked or loose near the extractors youd hear lots of back firing.. any of that at all?

otherwise it might be an exhaust leak causing the incabin smell

          Thanks guys.
Just FYI it is a diesel and DSG.

How can I test if it is clutch or exhaust leak?

No backfires that I know of. (I would notice wouldn't I?)

          Thanks again

Smell seems to have gone in the last 2 days.
            Seems to be very intermittent.

look for black soot marks around the exhaust/turbo area

going to assume you mean under the car and not in the bay?
would I still have the soot if it has a DPF?

                  Re: Weird burnt smell?

Clutch is a distinct smell... A mix of tyre smoke and sulphur

A clean turbo diesel burn will normally Smell slightly sweet

It's not just your brake pads is it...

Honestly, I am not familiar with any of these smells, so I cannot compare, it's a pain..
And it seems very intermittent, I guess i will try some hard breaking to get the pads going?

sounds like a small amount of oil has seeped out somewhere at the back of the engine during your spirited drives and is near the exhaust. when it heats up it just smells like burning oil - it does not take much oil to make you notice it in the cabin.

The other thing that can cause this smell is a PVC (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) air leak - the air inside you engine smells just like burnt oil from all the blowby when you heat the beast up.

How is your rubber firewall seal? If there are any gaps or not a proper seal you will get more engine smells entering the car as the fresh air enters just behind the seal under the wipers.

                        Thanks Gigitt,
I guess it could be oil, there is a little bit of it on the oil cap?

I dont know how my rubber firewall seal is, I know that the shiny silver stuff is peeling off the back of my engine bay.

the firewall engine seal is at the top edge of the firewall. it only seals when the bonnet is closed. You can't really miss it... it goes from one side of the engine bay to the other. There is also usually a foam square at it's ends that seals the gaps over the fender mounting seam on both sides of the car... sometimes these go missing and will let engine fumes pass.
The silver stuff is the heat shield stuff - it will only rattle if it is loose.

I'll take a look after work..

The smell actually comes from underneath the steering wheel, mainly on the right hand side under that little compartment etc.
