    exactly!!
my current weekly travelling since i left my job has been trip to the local shops, the odd trip to see my aunty in the adelaide foothills and the trip up to Hahndorf via the freeway - I live 3km east of the city and do a lot of city driving, with AC and a pretty heavy foot and get about 750/800 in town! which is why I was expecting a bit more - if i'm getting 6 or 7 ltrs aroind town I woudlve presumed it would drop to 5 or so on a long trip

on long trips i get an average of 5l per 100km going about 110km on the freeway...

Last year I went from Oxley park near Penrith to Robina on the Gold Coast ,Left home with a full tank and arrived with about 10 litres which was 45 litres used averaged 5ltr /100 km. I had 3 adults on board with luggage plus some other stuff I was taking to my daughters place ,It was a 900km trip.

I regularly do Melbourne to Albury (NSW border), my tdi usually averages around 4.4l/100 (on the MFD) for the entire trip.

This is done travelling at a true 110 km/h (not speedo).

Edit: I have one of these fitted which improved economy significantly: PSI motorsport : Diesel Tuning

I regularly get <6km/L on the highway, with aircon, doing 105-110k/h by gps.

This was with 225 width tyres though. I noticed my fuel consumption go up when I got 235s.

in saying this, i drive melbourne-sydney-melbourne a couple times a year and I have always made it to sydney with a tad under a quarter tank left. Always enough to get to the central coast without the fuel light coming on.

Went to the farm over Easter... fully packed Jetta and 2 people - averaged 4.4 on #1 and 4.6 on #2 MFD Fuel consumption.

Which is wrong... somewhere in the MFD...
as I did 1009.5km and I filled it up with 55lt of fuel as usual to the brim = 5.448 Lt/100km
            \( O ) o\====(\X/)=TDI=/o ( O )/ 2011 Jetta Mk5 125TDI - Squidly

Thats phenomenal! I generally get 6-6.5l/100 average 6.25l, although i have had 5.7/5.8 recently after injectors replaced and using some fuel additives, 138000km on the clock and that consumption measured at the bowser( not the computer)

That's pretty much on par with my usual highway fuel consumption.

The MFD is out by a margin of error, but then so too are fuel pump flow meters...

The only sure way to test consumption is to fill at a pump before you go.

Fill it at the same pump with the same load in the car when you get back and fill it till you can see the level both times.

The variation between auto stops can be huge with pumps and as you say the MFD reading bears little relation to reality.

I went lightly loaded Brissy to Coffs and return and got 5.6 l per 100km and thought that was pretty good.

Cant get the Polo into the 4's on a trip so how could anyone get a Passat down there.

My Passat has done only 11.000k.
