  • 2.0 TDI fuel milage - country driving

    Hello,

I've just completed a near 1200km journey into the centre of Australia in my MkV 2.0 TDI. 1198km on a tank and a 1/4 from Adelaide.

What I wanted to know is my last tank only got 850km which was fully highway driving with three or five stops... I usuallly get about 800 around town - so wouldnt I expect a bit more on a country trip? I did have the AC the entire trip and was sitting on about 110 as well - but still 6lt.100km isnt too bad! What do you usually get on a long highway drive? I was hoping to get about 1000 from a country tank

The 110km/h doesn't help with the fuel economy. To get the best fuel consumption you need to stay under 95km/h.
    Nice pictures.

    Are you using BP fuel?

Measuring consumption by the tank is a wildly inaccurate way of doing it UNLESS you fill it till you can see it then take the mileage Next time you fill it make sure its exactly the same as before,
Take the mileage again and work it out.
Using different pumps can give wildly different "FULL" levels due to the shutoff valve not necessarily being identical.
Would never do it that way as my last vehicle would take over 20 L after the shutoff activated.

As Transporter said anything above about 95kph fuel consumption goes up totally out of logical increase of speed.

Just as an indication on one day between Port Augusta and Coober Pedy we were getting 25L per 100km The next day we got 17l per 100km.

Same rig same load. Why?? The wind changed direction on the second day, made a lot of difference.

As already mentioned weather conditions play a role in fuel consumption, I always get about 7ltrs/100 on my freeway trip between Newcastle and Sydney but if its raining or windy I rarely get under 8ltr/100 on the same trip at the same speed (110kph).

Physics is the reason why a small increase in speed requires a disproportionate amount of fuel.
As speed doubles, drag (air resistance) quadruples, which at the end of the day, requires eight times as much power.

As for the range, the Golf has a tiny 55 litre tank, limiting how far you can practically travel.
So if you want to do 1000 km on a single fill, you need to achieve an average fuel consumption of 5.5 l/100km.
But considering you did 110 km/h on a coarse looking road surface with the A/C on, 6.0 l/100km isn't that bad.

If you drive on the highway a lot, increasing the (cold) tyre inflation pressure by 2~3 psi may be beneficial.
Don't forget to adjust the tyre pressure for heavy loads (if applicable), as per the tyre placard.

Yes, the hot weather doesn't help, so if you want to get a better fuel economy make as much of your driving as you can in the early morning hours when the air is cooler and has more moisture in it as well.

              Easy, thanks guys

Yeah look i'm not complaining with 800 given the road conditions and the heat (about 38 degrees and humid) the car did pretty well. The road into Mintabie is just a dirt track for 40km off the highway so even that the car performed pretty damn well. I still have maybe 100km or so anyway left so the tank isnt completely empty yet!

                Word of advice:
Best not to let the tank run dry if you can help it, as the fuel is apparently used to cool and lubricate components of the (expensive) fuel system.

I do trips from Sydeny up to our Farm 600km away, up the New England Highway. Pretty much nice roads up to Uralla then turn off to back country roads. Round trips are about 1300-1400km depending on how many trips into town we do.
I get usually average 4.6-4.8 lt/100 in my 125TDI Jetta on these trips
I have got 4.2 /100 on 2 occations comming home.
(note the car is usually 3/4 loaded 2 passengers with full boot and back seat)

I don't really use the air con,
                    tyres are at 36-38 PSI
and I stick to GPS calculated speeds (as my speedo is out ~8%)

Exactly, & as everyone with a diesel knows there is a lot of froth when filling & this needs time to settle. I think there is also an expansion section in the pipes/tank that fuel keeps going into if you keep pumping in fuel. This also becomes a variable in setting a benchmark.

Really I cant get anywhere near that in the POLO and got just under 6L per 100k between Brissy and Coffs and return at legal limits in the Passat with only 2 and a couple of suitcases in it Was on adaptive cruise most of the time.

This seems strange. about town mostly 60,70 and 80km zones i get around 700-800 sometimes 850 and im pretty heavy footed... usually 2 other people in the car and a pram in the boot. i dont use the AC much tho...

on long trips i get an average of 5l per 100km going about 110km on the freeway...
