  • new GTI member Melbourne...question!

    Hi all!

I'm a new member and just picked up a '06 GTI...i'm totally in love with it!

I drove one in Europe last year for a road trip and also around Nurburgring. After that trip, I knew I had to have one

Specs- Black 5 door, manual, leather, sat-nav, sunroof, 18" Karthoum factory wheels, xenon, ipod, elec lumbar, tint...

I'm hoping to put in coilovers (PSS9?) soon and then APR...

I live in Melbourne but I'm moving up to Brisbane in 2 months for work. I'd love to meet any members in Melbourne for a cruise or car wash (it's black so I have to wash it soo much haha) or trackdays.

I have a heap of questions and I love golfs so I can't wait to start chatting to you guys. I've spent ages searching for answers on this forum and you guys seem to know your stuff so hopefully you can help

QUESTIONS - any help at all will be greatly appreciated

I have the factory sat-nav but don't have the highline MFD...I was under the impression that you get the highline with sat-nav?...

My screen says i have 6 CD's but i know i dont, there's no stacker anywhere and it won't let me load them into the dash. Do I have to buy a stacker from VW and how would I get that installed?

Has anyone installed a DVD player into the sat-nav unit?

Can anyone recommend a dealer in Melbourne to get service. Anywhere on the eastside is fine, I live in southbank.

Cheers and thanks for having me!

    Dylan

Might have been a dealer fit, not a factory fit.

Isn't the 6 stacker in your console???

Try searching here and in other forums (VW Vortex etc.)

Can't help you with that one. Besides not living in Melbourne anyway, I service our GTI myself.

      Hi Dylan

With respect to your SatNav, it should be complete with the highline MFD and a six stacker which fits in the centre console. I am aware of other people who've been "short-changed" on the "factory" SatNav. It's clearly an afterthought dealer fitment. You've been diddled mate.

I'm not aware of any DVD fitment, although, l believe newer cars have gone to a DVD based system rather than CD based.

The only dealer that l go to for servicing is Barloworld Glen Waverley, where l bought my car. I've had no problems with them.

      Cheers

      Chris

        Welcome Dylan

I too have the factory sat nav and you should have the highline MFD - you should read my thread about mine in this section! I can't understand how you didn't get one.
With the sat nav, your stacker should be between the seats, under the arm rest. If your dealer didn't show you this, he is a crackpot.
I am suspecting that the sat nav may have been installed after your order was placed, as non sat-nav GTIs have an in-dash stacker with the standard MFD. I'm not quite sure why yours says 6 cd's though. Does it actually say that, or does it say "No CD 1" etc. If it is the latter, then it is the unit itself, as it is prepared for a stacker, whether or not you have one.
A dvd player can be installed into the sat-nav unit, by adding an auxiliary input, whose cubby hole is in the glovebox. A few threads in the audio section may tell you where to get them. Check and see yours, as you may have one hidden, and not removed like most others. Some of the sat-nav units apparently can play dvds.
As for dealers, I use Barloworld in Glen Waverley, mainly because of convenience, but also because they respond to a good kick up the backside if they deserve it!
        Hope this helps!

Did anyone say it is the factory fitted sat-nav?

You could ring VW who possibly would have a record of the factory fittings.

I believe "DEEJ" indicated it is a factory SatNav. It would probably be more appropriate to say that it's an OEM SatNav which has obviously been fitted through the dealer rather than at the factory during assembly.

Dylan, with respect to good dealerships in Melbourne (bearing in mind I am in Sydney) I have heard Barloworld in Glenwaverly and pretty much anywhere else is good. I am from Sydney and one of my work colleagues was telling me about her VW experience which was phenominal......PM later and i can forward you on the contact details of the place she goes to. They are responsive to a kick up the backside (if warranted) as well.

By the way you never lived in Zambia did you?

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I purchased the car from a guy who owned it for 12months so it still has 2 years warranty. The invoice says it has SAT NAV as a 'factory fitted option'. He gave me all those documents when i purchased the car. Doesn't this mean it should have the MFD?

If so, can I go to the dealer (Camberwell Volkswagon) and demand to have everything fixed up?

The screen says there are 6 CD's but when i click on any of them, they do nothing and just change playlists when my ipod is installed. There is no stacker, I looked everywhere and it wasn't in the car when i test drove it twice.

I was thinking about installing a DVD into the AUX input...not sure if that will be successful

As for the cruise, I'll definately try to make it if my gf gives me the day off :p She also lives in Glwn Waverly so i'll definately give Barloworld there a go for servicing.

Zambia...no sorry never been. Is it nice? haha

I have a friend in Melb called Dyan who just got a new car hence thought it might have been him.....Zambia is awesome....I grew up there.

As for SAT/NAV changer thing...I think you get either the iPod Dock or the changer and can't have both. Sounds like you have the iPod dock fitted. Also the single DVD unit without changer can be fitted in Australia....the unit with changer has to be done at factory. Hence it is possible yours was fitted here after the car was built which could explain the MFD.

Mind you I am yet to become a Jetta owner....can't wait till Sunday 20 Jan.....I am just going on what I have learnt so far.

                        Regards
                        Tom

                          Thanks Thomas,

From my experience with forums, it's the people who haven't got their car yet who seem to know the most! The anticipation seems to leave you spending endless nights searching every last bit of information about your soon to be baby

I guess you're right about the ipod taking precedent over the changer but i'd still like to get a changer installed. It still doesn't explain the lack of highline MFD. I feel like I have been ripped off. Like the dealer just chucked it in when the car arrived in Australia. Hopefully this is the case and I can get it all fixed.

                          Cheers

                            hey welcome aboard deej.
As the contract of sale was made with the previous owner i doubt you have a chance of getting the issue rectified if the sat nav was installed by the dealer.

I spoke to them today and they said they will address it with my next service whatever that means. I will fight this with them because it's a pretty dodgy thing to do. Not being able to use all those buttons is really annoying!

                              wish me luck
