  • Thinking about buying a MKV GTI

    Hey guys,

Im thinking about buying a 07 MKV Gti Manual. Its done about 80000kms. My goal is to do it up with mods possible stage 2 and use it as my daily driver and a bit of fun on the weekends. I have never owned a golf before but really like they way they look.

I have sorta been stuck between choosing the golf over some of its rivals in a similar price range (focus xr5 and wrx) but in the end i think the golf will be a better ride.

So just a few questions, is there anything i should be looking out for before buying the golf? And do you guys think golf mkv is still a good buy?

Yes, they're a wonderful car and you can't go wrong with the 6 spd manual.

Much easier to go alot faster in the WRX though.

Really solid things mk5s. Great when tuned but there are a few common things that need seeing to first. To prevent boost leaks and maximise your tuning efforts.

I will not regret with the Golf MkV GTI!! I was at the same situation as you just over 3 months ago, I was at a Subaru dealership looking for a WRX hatch, prior to that I made an appointment with a lady to inspect a 2010 Focus XR5. The Golf was parked at the very end in the used car section, when I opened and closed the door of the Golf, I was 60% sure I want it. After the test drive, I went in to the office and made an offer, one week later I was and still am a happy owner of a MkV GTI.

I've owned a couple of WRXs and a 3.0 Liberty. I now have an 08 R32. They just don't compare.

The WRX might beat you at the lights, maybe, but the GTI is just a better place to be. Nice to look at, more space and comfort, better fit and finish. Resale. And they handle.

              Get it!

No really Do it, my first vw and love it. so much fun to drive, i have my tuned by Gav and its awesome.
I was going to get a xr5 but i didnt rego sucked, you pay for 6 and insurance was crap dont even ask about a wrx insurance because i was looking at one also.
For me the quality of the gti won me over and great reviews, just looked better i think but thats just me.

Yea thanks guys for you support make me want to get one asap. I have two in mind one is an 07 link model and the other is an 09 link Cant tell if its one of the first ones that have the tsi because i heard they are a better motor than the fsi model. May be worth spending the bit extra to get one?

I'm pretty certain we did not get the 2.0L TSI in the Mk5 Golf.

What about the GT? I remember that being a TSI.

I think you're right, the 2.0L TSI was in the MK6

There's not a much performance difference or day to day difference living with them

There are more (cheaper) after market products for the TFSI
If you upgrade to Stage II you will need a new high pressure fuel pump $1,100

Still lots of stuff available for the TSI (upgrading to K04 Turbo is more difficult and much more expensive)
(TSI fuel pump is fine - no need for upgrade)
But a MK6 is going to cost more...

                          He wants a 2.0L GTI

The GT is TSI but it's 1.4L

There were a few other subtle differences for the 09 as well - it got the full hieght MFD display (which can show navigation and radio functions) and a later 'gateway' that allows you to use the newer VW headunits such as the RCD510 and RNS510 (the gateway can be upgraded easily, the MFD is cost prohibitive).

Hey Al, can you tell me a bit more about the gateway upgrade. I have a 05 GTI with a version C RNS510, and because this version was for newer models than mine, the steering wheel buttons don't work anymore with exception to volume. Would this gateway upgrade fix the problem and how do I get it done? Cheers, Tony.
