  • My Trip Computer is spitting out crazy FUEL Consumption numbers

    Help me pls!!

Jumped in my FAST to get some milk and while driving i see my ACTUAL OIL/Litre cosumption (not Average) is jumping around spitting out random numbers - eg. 50/L, 20/L, 17/L etc

At idle - eg. when in the garage not driving with key just turned it shows that i am using 1.1/L of fuel.

    My questions:
    1) Anyone seen this before, is this a costly fix. It is just the Trip Computer going crazy or the fuel sensor? (how long to fix if you had it done)
    2) Someone pls go and turn the key on their fast not driving a check if it says 0/L of fuel or same as mine 1.1/L.

    Thanks in advance!!

thats L per hour i think
    And sounds normal to me?

It only says 0 if the car is rolling and in neutral. If you idle it is actually using fuel so it should be showing some consumption.

As for the high figures. Ive not really taken much notice of mine but again the couple times ive watched it for fun it has spiked up to high numbers when u give her some welly. but only for a split second

Those will be instantaneous consumption figures, it should show 0 if you are coasting with the throttle closed above 1500 revs.

Flooring it will take it down towards 99.9

This is actually normal. These are acceleration figures and if you continued for the duration of 100kmh taking into account your speed at the time and the depression of the throttle you would indeed need that much fuel!

            sorry, i should explain.
Even when coasting not accelrating hard - the numbers will still jump around and eventually settle down.

              crazy DSG trickery perhaps!?!

Still if the car is performing fine. And the average consumption is relatively normal i wouldnt see cause for alarm.

The instantaneous figures are a bit misleading and are really only relevant under constant throttle, and are updated every 2 seconds (I think). If you want a more realistic consumption figure, I'd suggest switching to Average, as it gives a figure based on your current journey.

You can get some ridiculous numbers on instantaneous - I've seen 0 l/100 km coasting downhill (technically impossible without switching the motor off) and up to 100 l/100 km reversing in a hurry.

The computer is what it is: a consumer level _guide_ to consumption, accurate over a long distance, not each and every second. Even F1 teams would have an element of doubt over individual readouts - averages are always what are most accurate. In Statistics it's called sampling. Like doing a survey of 1 person versus a survey of 1000 - which result is more believable?

In ANY normal manual EFI car you injectors will be injecting zero fuel when your foot is off the loud pedal and RPM is above 1500.

Ie - Coast down hills using engine braking and your car will definently use 0L/100km while the engine is turning over.

                            hey minigolf,
i did go through the manual, it dosn't talk about needing warm up before giving accurate Fuel Consumption. As you might know, the GTI manual dosn't go into that much detail - it just explains what the different functions are for...

Sorry dude, I re-read your post again and the explanations for how the current fuel consumption works is covered in the manual. Refer to Section 3, page 20, specifically...

Current fuel consumption in l/100km or l/h
The display will show the current fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres while the vehicle is in motion or in litres per hour when the vehicle is stationary with the engine running.
Your car is not broken, there is nothing wrong with it. It is operating as expected and as explained in your manual.
