Your only allowed 2 inches above stock. Although I have 19's on mine when stock was 16 inch however I've been pulled over a few times for rba speeding etc and never had any problems from cops even though mines pretty low and loud and clearly turbo
(((((( i would be going Princess highway most fridays if they are vw wheels i could claim it was a factory option?

The budget right now is getting thinner with every new thing I grab. I'm only wanting to spent a max of $1500 on just wheels and then move onto some decent tyres. As to when I get them, I'm still trying to find a set I really like.
Sorry to butt in, but i was doing some light reading a little while back, unfortunately couldnt find the info from SA, but the VIC and NSW rules on wheels i did find.
From what i gathered they both said you can go 2 inches above the largest factory fit wheel to that model, so for instance, if VW offered a 17" on the GTI then the standard golf can go up to 19", as long as your rolling diameter doesn't get bigger by more than 15mm. and it's quite strict on width as well, but they both differ on that. Don't quote me though(I'm not a reputable source ), but do look it up, it's out there somewhere.
Might pay to look it up and have a read through, carry a copy if you upgrade you wheels, just to show them you know what your doing if they start being petty.
Just my 2 cents.
Mine: -MK5 Golf 2.0TDI[Deiselgeek sigma 6 shifter + H&R 50mm lowering springs + GTI Tartan interior + Audi 18x8 A6 wheels(Dark Steel)]
-MK1 Golf The re-spray/re-build
In the family: -MK5 Jetta 2.0TDI, -9N3 Polo TDI, -6R Polo TDI, -Mitsubishi S^$&box van
A pattern seems to be forming...

I dont think the gti and 'normal' golf are the same thing...
the way to tell (and how the police would on the spot if they pulled you over) would be to check the tyre placard, which will be under your fuel cap or in the door somewhere.
It would be the largest of these for YOUR car.
However... Holden guys put HSV placards in there cars so it looks like they can legally run 20s etc
On the subject of going above 2 sizes, it's not the cops you have to worry about, it's the VicRoads guys driving around. On my Euro-R I had 18" wheels and the stock was 16". They went ballistic claiming stock size was 15" and blah blah blah. Never had an issue with Police for my wheels.
Who imported the Euro-R. Never sold in Australia...
