Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

DPF engines have different engine codes to non-DPF engines, but unfortunately I don't know what the various 4 cyl TDI engine codes are (I could help you with R5 engine codes). Is this info in the owner's manual ?

Another way is to floor it at low revs under load and watch for black soot coming out the exhaust: generally no visible soot = DPF, visible soot = No DPF

Also be aware that DPF equipped TDIs need VW 507.00 engine oil.

The link MRL T5 sent me has a picture of the device and the placement. This is exactly that (well by my reckoning).

I rotated the picture (i.e. it is now upside down) so the numbers were up the right way to read them.

My car has a build date of Nov 06 and an 07 compliance plate (first registered in April 07) and has MY07 on the paperwork too. Another difference between MY06 and MY07 spec was the controls on the steering wheel.

When they sold it to me they said that because it has a DPF not to use bio-diesel (there is a sticker on the fuel lid too). The selling dealer again confirmed it on the phone.

Built date, according to link posted, determines whether your car has DPF or not.
But how can one tell which built date has it and which not. Your car has built date Nov 06 and has DPF, while mine doesn't. There must be crossover somewhere and decision made to put DPF from this built date forward.
Between your car and mine only three months difference yet one has and other doesnt
So whats needed is when in 2006 VW has decided to put DPF. Obviously not Aug 06. September maybe

Pros and cons of the DPF -

                      Pros - cleaner exhaust
Con - restricted flow which I would imagine would impact performance?
Con - more heat to manage in the back of the engine bay

As diesel fuels get cleaner we would all benefit.

                        Hi Spoddy,
The picture you posted is picture of the catalytic converter and
not DPF. If your engine code (look in the owners manual) is AZV or BKD you don't have DPF.
Engine with DPF has code BMN (125kW).
DPF has few electrical connectors: Two temperature senders(one at front and one at the back), lamda probe (oxygen sensor).

Here is picture of the 125kW engine showing DPF. You can clearly see the temperature sender @ top & @ bottom also visible is Lambda sensor.
