  • No cold air from AC

    Hi Guys

Went to use AC today, and no go. Wife then mentions its been like it “for a while”.

    Dec 2004 (mk5) 2.0tdi.

Fan blows air, temp control works for heat but no cold air, there is no change in engine when the AC is turned on/off (used to see the fuel meter go from 0.6 to 0.9 l/hr), so I assume that the compressor is not cutting in.
I see no mention of AC fuses in the manual.
    No Faults show in VCDS

Any clues pls on where to start for fuses and relay for AC? Or is this a common bigger issue?

    Many thanks.

Unfortunately many of the earlier mk5's had a fault with the air conditioning compressor causing it to fail. I hope this isn't your issue but it's certainly a common fault.

Best to get it checked to determine what's at fault.

My 2005 Sportline had the same symptoms last November, I got it checked by a local auto electrician. In my case it turned out to be a faulty compressor. This was replaced under warranty thankfully.

      Good luck with yours.

        Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Unfortunately the horror of VW ownership continues. $1740 for a new compressor, couple other components and a system flush.

Air Con specialist in Milton has 6 bays in the workshop, when I dropped the car off this morning it made 4 bays occupied by late model VW/Audis (Q7, TT, Golf V and mine). And I quote this “Because it is such a common problem with VW all the parts are in stock, have it finished after lunch”. Wow! Had to wait over a week for injectors to arrive; but then again that was the dealer.

This makes 4 expensive failures in 18 months, started 3 weeks after the extended warranty ended – it has been by far the most unreliable car I ever owned and that includes the bomb I had when I was 17. Now start looking for another car, Mrs wants a new Golf or A3 (it’s her car), no way – never have a VW again.
