  • BSH True Seal CAI Noise Induction / harmonic whine?

    Hi Forum,
Just installed the BSH CAI kit (got it from Tim @ dubaddiction) and am having a high end whine under hard acceleration

    (as per this link):-

BSH True Seal Intake MKV GTI - YouTube

Anyone got a similar CAI with this issue? It is a tad annoying from inside the car at times and preference would be to muffle it a bit.

    Any suggestions??

    Cheers

Had exactely the same kind of noise when I had my BMC CDA, didn't really bother me and got used to it...

My friend has the Forge Twintake on his Mk5 GTI and it doesnt sound anything like the video you posted.

Why dont you ask Tim from Dubaddiction about it and see if he can tell what it is? What material is the pipework made from? Aluminium or tainless steel? If you cant tell, have a look at the welds, aluminium has really chunky weld, where stainless steel is a fine weld.

I know the material used for the pipework can affect the sound of the intake. My friend with the GTI had a AWE Tuning intake before he got the Forge. The AWE Tuning intake used a stainless steel pipe and it sounded horrible - very high pitched and artificial. The Forge intake is made of aluminium and has a softer and less high pitched sound.

BSH true seal piping is aluminium as well.
My car does not sound the same as the video, only occurs at gear change and mostly when driving hard.
Not sure what to do, may try a restricting ring at the front , however this would be defeating the whole purpose of the kit in the 1st place.

Well as some people with the BSH CAI are aware, there is bloody annoying whise/buzz at WOT with this intake, and after lots of attempts of rectifying this I have not only discovered the cause of it but eliminated it.
It is due to that stupid DV relocation point on the bend of the BSH pipe just before the intake to the turbo.
This has been causing an effect called resonance.
A resonance chamber can be cancelled out by 2 methods.
          1) lengthen the chamber
          2) shorten it
Being in Australia as the master brake cylinder and reservoir sits just millimetres from the DV relocator point I could not lengthen it, so I got a local engineering firm to machine a plug out of nylon. I measured up the width and depth and dropped of the design to them and the manufactured it.
Plugged it in, started her up and took her for. a fang
          Guess what
          No damn stupid whistle/buzz

Anyways if that's the issue you have been having, just get a vernier calipee measure the inside diameter of the dv point and depth and get it made from nylon as it can withstand the high temps of the engine bay and ug it in enjoy your gti. Obviously make the plug in a T shape so as it doent get sucked into the turbo.
BSH I hope you get something out of this and supply future customers of you CAI with this item instead of that el cheapo rubber cap.
What is surprising, if you have the APR tuning software and select the VW stock tune and then go WOT there is no whistle/buzz but on stage 2 selected there is.

interesting, does this issue seem to only affect chipped cars?
I have the evoms intake on my mk5 and its spot on, sounds tough and no whine. My car isn't chipped though.

I switched from stage 2 back to stock and no it doesn't do it. Weird isn't it.

                must be the extra boost

but yeah my mk5 did it, switched to forge twintake, barely audible unless you concentrate but no where near as high pitched as bsh and a few other exposed air filter out there.

for a moment i thought my turbo was goneskies

                  Thanks for the solution Phillip.
Any chance you could put up a copy of the measurement and design so I can get one made as well?
