  • 2008 gt d problems?????

Hi Guys have a 2008 GT D that wouldn't start one morning two weeks ago and the sqwigly light on dash came on which when I looked up the owners manual said there was a prob with the diesel management system.

Rang the service folk who said the car needs to be brought in...............good thing I have RACV total care.

Anyway according to their diagnostics the problem was a faulty crankshaft speed sensor.

    So a sensor @$93.30, +$7 for a gasket, +$65.80 Coolant, +$19.90 oil +$15 battery charge + $327 for 3 hrs labour and a stop light globe @ $4.50 came to $592.55 + $59.26GST.

So this morning I get in the car and its the same deal..............car wont start, same dash light comes on, ring the service folk who are most surprised and say they will be there in 15 minutes (got to give them bonus points as I did not expect that)......anyway mechanic rocks up with diagnostic box which he hooks up to the car and woe and behold it says its the same problem again.

Mechanic is baffled and says they have replaced these sensors in the past with no issues.

Tells me car has to go back to the workshop.

Once again glad I'm in the RACV.

I ask if they have a VW data base they can access to see if there is a similar scenario on record and am told they will be running this by their VW contacts in the UK..............assumedly the UK methinks because they don't speak German.

Anyway Guys................anybody have a similar issue and how it was solved?

Does that light come on before or after the crank? If I recall that squiggly logo comes up and then disappears very quickly after a second or so on a correctly functioning diesel golf.

You could have a faulty glow plug or glow plug ignition circuit.

Diesels don't take much to start... heat, fuel and compression....

if you're even basically mechanically savvy, I'd your glow plugs. 2 min job with a multimeter. Loads of video on youtube showing you how to do this.

The other areas I'd be looking at is fuel pump pressure or faults, or (post crank) issues with the injectors.

Not sure what the crankshaft sensor thing is all about...

        Warning light like this?

If so, glowplug or glowplug circuit error I'd say... Check fuses etc and check the plugs...

I'm just not sure if you are talking about a GTD (CR) or a GT TDI (PD). I'm not sure the GTD was released in 2008.

I have the same car,and have had this happen to me a few times, first time i rang the friendly NRMA ,and the bloke didn't have a clue about the VW 's so i rang again and a second one told me to just keep cranking even though the oil pressure low warning came up ,
After a minute it started to fire up and was OKk for over a month when it did it again , now i just persevere till it starts .

Didn't work for me and just ended up with a flat battery quick smart. Besides it has to be doing it for a reason and that has to be sorted out as far as I'm concerned.

First I've read about that issue. Far out what a bummer. Seems it was a genuine issue there for a while.

It's a potential issue on all mk5 gt tdi's. At least it seems vw is paying for most of the repair cost these days.

I find it hard to believe that the diagnostic gear doesn't tell the mechanic more specifically what's at fault - or maybe it did and he didn't tell you?
