  • GTI very crook, need assistance with diagnosis

    Hi All,
A friend has a MkV GTI that has some issues.
She had the CEL come on and promptly ignored it as it was still running OK.
Now it will turn over OK, fire a few times and then stall.
    VCDS scan is below.

Any hints as to what the likely issue might be I'd appreciate input.
I have a guess but thats all it is, a guess as I'm not a mechanic.

    Thanks in advance

havnt had a great deal to do with the VCDS, but i would think all the misfires are linked to the fuel measuring fault. the intake leak is pretty obvious and probly linked to the higher idle, and the previous faults. iv seen the same symptons when the idle air control solenoid/motor goes. you can check this buy holding down the throttle a little when starting. if it fires and holds revs at a little higher then idle then theres your problem. Not sure if thie will work with a fly by wire throttle if thats what it has. What where you thinking?
Finding that air leak would help. if you can fix that then you may find the other faults clear up or at least help narrow it down.

      Thanks for the reply.

My guess was that it might be an issue with the MAF sensor. If the MAF is failed or failing I thought that it might mean the ECU has no idea how much fuel to supply. But not sure if the MAF would log a specific fault, not had any experience with these things.

But the air leak would sound to be pretty self-explanatory. Just need to find it.

You might not be far of the mark there either. Its a fuel/air problem for sure. I have not played with VCDS on V Dubs yet im still waiting for my cable. I assume your using the ross tech cable? I would have thought it would tell you a sensor was not reading right. maybe find someone else with a working MK5 GTI or car with the same engine and do a bit of sensor swapping.

Yeah its genuine Ross Tech cable. Have found out the MAF would log a specific fault, so should be a matter of finding the intake leak in a hose and/or valve. Hopefully a pretty easy fix.

When I had a leak in my intercooler charged air pipe (passenger side) VCDS gave me this error fairly often until I replaced it:

If it is the MAF, punch the part number into eBay for a Bosch ones and you'll save a boatload over the dealership.

Turns out it was the ecv. Car hasn't run as well the whole time theyve owned it so likely was already leaky.

U mean PCV, common issue, not only in Golfs but many different makes only it gets highlighted here obviously. I totally agree with the carbon build up too, they miss a fair bit at cold start when this is the case, injectors caked with it. No software in the world will fix it

jmac how can you remove the carbon build up that causes the missing when cold? is a complete dismantle and clean the only way? i assume the subaru UEC isn't enough?

I use BG equipment for that.
What engine are we talking about? How many km? How badly contaminated? All this I consider before making the decission how to clean it. Badly contaminated intakes have to be removed.

This is interesting. My gti's done 171,000km and I dont have misfire on start up or loss of power but i live at the top of a very steep hill and when its cold it back fires coming down the hill in fourth with no throttle input, but it does have a big tbe. This guy rekons you may need this every 7500 miles! How bad is the fuel over there? According to this my engine should have fused together by now! Also how does it safely remove the deposits? Where do they go?
