G’day Guys,
I’ve just put a deposit down on a UG (yes, it’s a popular colour it seems) GT Sport TDI with DSG and sunroof, and I’m just waiting to sell my XR5 Turbo (brilliant car) to get the funds to pick up the Golf. To cut a long story short, I love my XR5T to bits, but I’m an Environmental Scientist (as well as a driving enthusiast), and I’m looking to set a better example. I’ve been waiting for a car that offers genuine driving thrills, but that also has low CO2 emissions, so when the GT Sport TDI came along, my wish had been granted.
I’ve been a pretty staunch Ford man for a number of years now, but Ford didn’t really have anything suitable in their range. The Focus TDCI is a good car for the price, but it’s quite low spec and doesn’t have a particulate filter, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the Golf, so the choice wasn’t too hard in the end.
It’s going to be a fairly significant drop in performance (my modified XR5 has 210 kw and 440 nm and goes like the proverbial off a shovel) for me, and I’ll really miss the XR5 soundtrack, but I’m looking forward to about a 30 -35% improvement in fuel economy. I’ll be looking at getting the Bluefin remap as soon as it’s available, and hopefully that will satisfy my need for speed.
Anyway, I get the mod bug with all my cars, and this one will no doubt be the same, so I’m wondering if anyone could point me towards a ‘one stop shop’ for all my Golf MK V aftermarket performance needs. For the Focus there is an online shop called European parts that has everything you could want, but I’ve been unable to find such a store for the Golf. Would I be right in thinking that American Stores are largely no good to me, as they don’t have the diesel Golf in the U.S?
I love the interior and the build quality of the Golf, but when I parked my lowered XR5 next to it, I realised the styling is um, shall we say, somewhat understated? So, I’m keen to get some lowering springs (preferably Eibach pro-kit) as soon as possible, and I’m wondering if someone could point me towards a local or online supplier? Also, does anyone know where I could get the Gti side skirts, and what the price is likely to be?
Anyway, looking forward to being part of this forum, and learning a lot more about the Golf and all things Veedub.
Cheers,
Simon.
