Checking condition of the DSG

Hey everyone, plan on going test drive a few GTI DSG this weekend. No clue about DSG's Any specific sounds I should be looking out for? Any particular actions I should perform to see whether the gear box is in good shape? The more information people can provide would will be very much appreciated !?! THANKS!!!

Use it in all 3 modes, D S and Manual. The current owner might not like but you should rev the nuts off it and see what it changes like when you do that.

Must have had an oil change every 60K.

Should set off rolling, as soon as you come off the brakes, any lag in take off would be wrong. Might be able to stop that with a DSG reset with a VCDS cable, but you want that cleared before handing over your money. This sounds like you are slipping the clutch, you can feel the engine rev but the drive doesn't come in until much later. Makes parking a chore and hills starts a nightmare.

I'll echo Gavin's sentiments on the hill start.
I would find the biggest hill you can and try accelerating on it from a stop.
This should show if the DSG has any faults.

Also reverse very slowly preferably up a slight incline. If it is not smooth, there maybe problems.

I tested mine on the upramp of an underground carpark in the city. They are often very steep and will show up the problem Gavin has described.

Also check for a shudder, or a jolt as it selects first gear when coming to a stop.

No, I mean like a slight "bunny hop" feeling. Hard to describe, but that was alerted me to my DSG problem in a MKV GTI. Ultimatele, the mechatronics was replaced under warranty.

Oh ok, mine's more of a soft judder - don't think its major lol actually quite used to it. Doesn't happen as hard if the brake is applied properly before..ill re-test tonight.

Judder is the word I was looking for. Mine started being very mild, barely noticeable but progressively got worse and then the false neutrals started.

What would happen to indicate there is fault?

The two things Gavin has noted here - as soon as (well, within 50milliseconds maybe) you take your foot off the brake, do you have forward movement? And, when you go to accelerate do you get instant drive or does the engine rev likes it's in neutral for a second.

I would also add to that, do you get a strong shudder when accelerating away as this can suggest a problem.

This has nothing to do with the dsg. But I was wondering what to look out for to see whether the car has been in any major damage. ?

Paint that doesn't match.

Paint tech is pretty good these days but still usually stands out if it has had some.

If you are concerned about this, get someone to inspect it for you.
