It did sound like fuel starvation, although the same symptoms could have been attributed to other faults. This is why speculation of faults and cures without proper investigation is so often pointless.
    Fingers crossed.

Unrelated fault with a similar lead up to the occurrence. Years back a mate had a MK1 GTI running a 16V on carbs. I noticed there was a 10mm nut missing from inside one. I remarked, can't be inside because we would have heard some horrible noises.

Several months later the engine gets removed to clean up the engine bay, as the install had been done in a bit of a rush. Engine goes back in and sounds like death when it got started.... 10mm nut found on top of a piston, bent valve and nasty misfire.

The strangest things can happen in accidents or during unscheduled maintenance.

Thought I'd give another update on this for those with a similar issue who might have been following.

Sent car back to AVW last Friday - the spluttering problem reoccurred a week after I picked the car up after they cleaned the hpfp out the first time. The checked the whole fuel system and didn't find the fault. They then removed, cleaned, rebuilt and replaced the pump again and hey presto, car back to normal. So their conclusion is that the hpfp has been damaged and needs to be replaced. So that's what's going to happen and they'll do the cam follower while they're at it.

I really hope this does it! I want my car back!

^ good to hear that it looks like the issue has been pin-pointed. You should get a HPFP upgrade (seeing it needs replacing anyway) and then a revised tune from DNA to suit.....= more powaaa.

haha what are your skills like at convincing insurance companies of the merits of an aftermarket hpfp?

Nah, because this problem has only occurred after my not-at-fault accident, it's stock replacements only. And I was loving how the car was driving before the crash so happy for it to be set right as it was!
