A friend who does mobile services (with extensive experience at both Porsche (7yrs) and Ferrari (3yrs) dealers - does any cars but specialises in euro) did my 60k service including DSG for well under half the dealer quotes of $1300-1500.
It took him 2 and a bit hours, he doesn't make money from parts- just an honest guy who charges cost plus labour.
He laughed his head off at a dealer service I had done (from looking at my book) where they had done three fifths of f**k all (ie: oil change and oil filter change) and charged close to $600. which didn't include a loan car!
If only there were more like him going around.Current - MY16 2015 Octavia VRS Wagon 220 tsi DSG Corrida Red, tech, Leather, 18" black

I checked this with my local dealer after my wife's 2009 TDI was serviced at 45,000kms and his reply was:Originally posted by jessv3 View PostExactly, you got quoted 1.4k from a dealer which is what I was referring. Any independent will be much cheaper, mine was $850 inc timing belt + water pump, but no dsg service (manual).
The service book never refers to time to replace a timing belt, but like any moving part it gets old with age and driving around with an old timing belt is risky. The service schedule for the MKV was revised to every 4 years which actually means any golf 2008 or older should have had the belt changed, if you have any doubts just contact your local dealer.

"The manufacturer made these decisions to extend the time frame for the
toothed belt, as long as it hasn't reached the 105,000km range, it can be up
to 7 years, their belief is that the belt can last 7 years without any
concerns.
The belt is checked from 60,000kms onwards and replaced no later than 105,000kms/7 years or sooner if required."
So it looks like they have revised their original thoughts which were in our service books and the dealer suggested checking the service schedule that is attached to your service invoice as it has the latest details of what is required.Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional !
