No Toyota or other Japanese car will match European car in the same category on safety (active or passive safety).
Almost right - with the exception of Subaru on both active and passive safety. Check out their NCAP results and the videos on the link below - every bit as good as Mercedes/BMW/Audi.
Be interesting if you (perhaps we in february) feel the same way if we're shelling out $6000+ for a new DSG in 4 years time.
Sure, if you put performance chip in it, it does increase possibility that DSG will fail, since it is build for up to 360Nm torque(aprox.) Than you shouldn't be supprised that it faild. For normal driving you should be fine. Did you at least roadtested Golf with DSG, if not arrange roadtest, read something positive about it and focus on what is good in that car.
I thing there are a lot of happy VW owners, who axcept the car as is and no reliability report will affect their opinion about the car they own. If only every car was build as well as Volkswagen.
Well, the last Holden I owned (HSV GTS) had around $7000 worth of work done whilst under warranty. The last Mitsubishi (Lancer GSR) had a centre gearbox failure (due to a manufacturing error) at about 40,000 kms.
Six Toyotas in a row (RAV4, MR2, Kluger, RAV4, RAV4, Hilux) and not one warranty claim between them, though only one was an exciting drive.
It will be interesting to see how the VW fares. Perhaps I don't expect it to be niggle free, but I'd be very surprised if I see the mechanical issues I had with HSV and Mitsubishi.

I think what car you purchase could easily have a major impact of this study. Let me put it to you this way.
If you go and buy the cheapest car on the market, you are buying it not for the driving pleasesure but because it's cheap. You are less likly to be as curious to an unusual sound and the quality and finish is not going to be a big impasct for you. If something is only slightly less than desirable, you'll probably over look it.
If you purchase a car for driving pleasure, your going to get something where you will return it back for any slight concern. Your looking for a car manufacturer who is commited to quality, and will take the time to investigate even the slightest complaint.
Just my 2 cents

Very true. If I'd bought a Hyundai, Kia, etc, I'd be happy if the doors were still attached.
Though I'd be very sad that I'd bought such a thing.
It is now being well recognised by the industry journo's that Hyundai has pulled off one of the most significant manufacturing quality turnarounds of any vendor.
While they might not be building exciting cars (yet), expect the i30 and the new premium RWD that's been announced to assult the traditional vendors on their home turf.
i30 Hot Hatch is still on it's way.
Hyundai may become to the global market what Skoda is to VW, the same car at better value, built in a cheaper country, and more profitable.

If u think your going to have problems it might be wise to take out the
extended warranty during your first three years. That will cover u for 5 years
so you will not have a problem with the DSG in 4 years time.
Just get the car and enjoy it. You should be thinking of other things other
than warranty issues etc. Like the fun you will have.
