  • VW as usual bottoms out the reliability survey

    Start at the begining:

    Jump straight to the charts:

And before everyone starts flaming me, VW (and Audi) have performed poorly in JD Power Surveys for some time now. (I have the last few years of results here in PDF but the forum limit is pretty restrictive).

i find it odd that they call these things "reliability" surveys. its based on the percentage of customers who take their cars back to the dealer within the first 5 months of ownership for warranty claims. anyone who's owned a dub (specially an mk3 or mk5) would know that 99% of these "warranty" claims would be for tiny niggles such as a rattling clip thats come undone on the dash or a rattly speaker caused by a loose screw.

my point: you'd get laughed at for taking a hyundai or kia back to the dealer to complain about a rattle

why dont they base this on failed parts etc it would be much more useful

      Reliability surveys

One has to be careful how some of these things are interpreted. As they say, figures can be made to lie. Before buying my MkV TDi, I read a heap of road test reports on the net. My other main interest was in the Peugeot 307 HDi, however a number of the tests hinted that the build quality is not as high as the Golf. After 20,000km since 5th April, it's a decision I don't regret.

If the bicycle was in that reliability competition it would be at the top.

Actually they're based on comprehensive customer surveys (well JD Power reports are) and not returns to the vendor for warranty claims.

Many things effect a Vendors performance, squeaks and rattles being one, usability being another (BMW dropped many many places for iDrive because no one could figure out how to work it) and yes, squeaks and rattles affect Hyundai's and Kia's performance, hence Hyundai, after much hard work, now does very well in JD Power and Kia does not.

          It's interesting to note:
          - Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Lexus generally earn their reputation the hard way.
          - Some GM and Ford brands do particularly well in the US, where as their reliability here is not as good.
          - Prestige marques are a very mixed bag, with most European cars scoring abysmally, particularly for the premium in price.

I love the technology in a VW, and I'm hankering for a GT or GTI early next year, but I'm not looking forward to the much higher possibilities of a troubled ownership much unlike our three Toyotas.

On the other hand, VW charge a premium for a similar product, and if that's not going into superior manufacturing, then it's lining some GM and shareholders pockets.

And if Toyota manage to bring a Blade here early next year, I’m gonna be hard pressed to choose between value for money, quality, reliability and medium fun, against possible sever unreliability (go read the TT DSG out of warranty posts in the UK) but great fun.

            Well ... I don't care. I love my dub.

Besides ... I think with a lot of these surveys ... it's the "Squeeky Wheel" syndrome ... never hear from the silent majority who don't have problems and love their cars.

My Mk3 is always costing money, but then it's shiny black and a VR6 so it all evens out

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Actually from all reports it is Toyota that are starting to drop the ball a bit. Apparently their quick expansion is really taking toll on their new models quality. Well thats what the media is saying anyways.

No Toyota or other Japanese car will match European car in the same category on safety (active or passive safety). $35,000 Corolla doesn't offer ESP even as option.

even all the electronics and fancy computer programs in the world cant substitute for a poorly made car thats for sure.

There must be something special about car owners in USA I can't recall the brand of the car that would not have a problem in USA: Toyota, SAAB - sludge in the engines, VW probably the biggest lemon in USA, Subaru - owners are complaining at different forums about all sorts of problems wheel bearings, gearboxes, clutches just to name a few. They complain a lot about Honda and Mercedes Benz too. May be there are too many whingers in USA. Just look at their own brand like JEEP, Chrysler how far did they get in reliability their own product. So, people who produced possibly the biggest lemon so far are complaining about other cars and some others just read something and rewrite it or send a link to that, for others to read it.
I must say it again, if the bicycle was at that reliability reports it would be a winner.
                      Cheers.

It'd be amazing if not only did the TFSI and TSI take out the engines of the year awards, the GTI took out most reviewers hot hatch of the year awards, but VW got in the top of JD Power and won an award for Golf reliability.

I just don't care about surveys.....
When I made my decision to buy that was it. Do i regret it?Absolutely NOT....
I love my MK5 TDI with all rattles and squeaks. It gives it personality.
Love automatic whippers and head lights and 10 speakers with airbags just about in every possible key spot for safety with ESP and brake assist ...... so many things to list...

Do I dislike few things? Yes...
Slightly overpriced servicing but that is just about it.

I think you will have to buy Toyota again as your naxt car.
