    Engine oil shelf life

That's a great price for Castrol Edge Sport.

Sounds like a stupid question but does unused motor oil (ie still brand new in an unopened bottle) have a shelf life or use by date? I assume that Castrol Edge Sport, being a synthetic product, would be ok to keep on the shelf for years, at least say 2 years?

I ask because if they don't have a shelf life then it would be good to stock up when sales like this one come around. I did notice that a date of manufacture is stamped onto the bottle though...

Also, I have heard various mechanics say it's not good to use oil that is too old. Are they just saying that to get us to buy from them (at RRP) instead?

Just my luck, went to my local Supercheap last night, they had every oil known to mankind but the location for Edge Sport 5W30 was of course empty!

I've been checking mine regularly, but this mornring it threw the oil light. Got out, checked it out and the level was mighty low! I shat my self.

Anyway, went and got some castrol 0W40 (it's due for an oil change on Thursday anyway).
I have my RED , 3DR MKV GTI with leather in manual and I love it!

Have you tried showing the Supercheap ad to Autobahn, Repco, AutoOne etc and getting them to price match?

Ya do get what you pay for. Stick with the big brands and change at least every 10k, especially if city driving. Easy to do yourself if between services, including filter. I have been using Mobil 0w-40w synthetic which exceeds Vws spec requirement. Remember turbo's are harder on engine parts and therefore your oil needs to be quality stuff.n:

Engine Oil Preference for 2.0 Petrol Turbo motor

I hope this hasn't been asked too many times before - I did do a search for the answer. Having found out that my 2007 FSI may use some oil between changes,(I've just bought the car) what oil and grade are people topping up with? The last owner said that he used Mobil 1. I know I may get heaps of answers but a common thread may emerge!

Castrol. A lot of people reckon Penrite is good, too. I don't reckon there's any difference.

I used to use Castrol, but my old man changed to Valvoline at his shop, so now I use that.. Seems quite ok.

You can either use VW spec 502.00 or 504.00. For peace of mind, you may as well just use 504.00. It only comes in 5w-30. There are a shedloads of threads similar to yours but Motul Specific, Penrite Enviro & Shell Helix Ultra Extra (that name may have changed) all do 504.00 and are available at Repco, Autobahn etc.

I've used the Valvoline 504.00 a couple of times & had it analysed once - after 15,000km it was at almost new spec.
