  • MK5 GTI oil (2.0L turbo petrol) preference.

Hey guys couldnt find anything searching.
Im gonna do the maiden oil change on the new GTI tomorrow. Just wondering what oil the dealers are using in these things? I tried ringing them today but their service dept was closed.
I figured i may as well put the same as what they do in there.

According to my invoices, my dealer (who shall remain nameless) have used Mobil Super S 10W40. As far as l'm concerned, this oil does not comply with the required VW specification 502 00. But, what can you do. That's what they use.

Coincidentally, today, l had an unscheduled oil and filter change done at Audvolks in Clayton. They used Castrol Edge 0W40.

Castrol say the following about Edge 0W40.

"This is Castrol’s best , full synthetic, low viscosity technology. The exceptional characteristics of this free flowing oil reduces friction and delivers ultimate wear protection and optimum engine performance right from start-up."

It does comply with VW spec 502 00.

      Hey Tim.

Keep looking to find a few threads regarding the oil issue.
From what I've read on this forum you need to be careful with the oil you use
      for the MK5.
I'm sure someone will direct you shortly to the thread.

We're running Mobil 1 0W-40 in our GTI and it seems to work a treat.

Also, have a read of this thread...
Hi all. I've just checked my engine oil level and I would need to top it up very soon. I wanna know which Castrol oil so I wouldn't 'corrupt' it. Is it the Castrol Edge or Castrol Magnatec 10W-40? Got the car from Camberwell VW at Burwood in Melbourne. Thanks all.

            Cheers Liam

You shold allways use the highest specs oil for your engine. Owner manual will give you the right specs no. Go with the highest no. in that manual since it is the latest at the time you car was manufactured.
The engine oil is cheap the engine is not.
Label on the oil container must have writen "approved by VW" not made to VW specs. That means the oil was tested and given approval by VW. If the oil company didn't submit oil sample to VW for testing label will not say approved it will say: "Meets or excedes specs...." "Made to VW specs....."

If it is not approved, than you can use really whatever, even cooking oil which is also not approved.
Mechanic, ha you probably know better that VW if you advising "whatever".
I wouldn't want you changing oil in my car.

I recently done an oil change myself.. after 2000kms taking on a new delivery.

Went to the stealership bought 5L of Castrol Castrol Edge Sport (with VW 50200/50500 standard) for $65 and new oil filter for $16. After the oil change.. the R is running better and 470km for a fulltank (instead of 420km fulltank b4 oil change).
