CD Storage (Jetta, plus Golf I suppose)

i have approx 130 cd's stuffed loosely into my glovebox. had the car about a year and none of the cds have died yet. since they're all copies it really doesnt matter. plus it looks cool

I personally hate nothing more than having heaps of cd's in the car. They drive me nuts! They are fidly to handle, a distraction to try and find the right one and then when you shove it in if your as careless as me they never work! My next HU will have to support USB. It's cheaper than CD's, faster to transfer to and so much smaller in size.

If you have a mate or relo going over to HK, get them to pick you up a handfull of the 8gb usb sticks (about AU$15 each). I've had mine for over a year now so you can probably get even bigger ones now. They are cheap, small and tidy and at that price - who cares if they break!

mmm but the trouble with having more than one cd on a storage medium (mp3 cd, usb key etc) is its even more of a nightmare to find the things you want, unless you're super organised, which im not, hence the glovebox of loose cds

although that being said, when i get the gt sport in a few weeks it will have an mp3 compatible cd player, so ill have one cd dedicated to each artist. if an artist has 10 albums or 1 album they'll still get their own mp3 cd.

I throw down the gauntlet here, I have an iPod connection and an iPod with tracks recorded using Apple Lossless Encoder and think that you will find that there is no quality difference.

The iPod is only as good as the files that they play, import from CD at high quality, and you will hear it as good as a CD.

As for the original question: CD wallet placement? No help from me...

Copy all of the CD's on to an IPod, then get the FM tuner on the Ipod and tune it into your radio, that way you can have all your music in one small package with a menu screen on the IPod and dump the CD's....

in my experience those things are shocking quality sound.

and im sorry but i refuse to buy a peice of electronic equipment that i know is going to die beyond repair shortly after 1 year of owning it. down with ipods!

Well I've priced up a USB socket adapter to the factory HU. $155 for a kit or $300 installed. Can put 6x folders with 99 songs in each apparently, each folder is linked to the DISC buttons. 600 songs at average of 5MB a song means I'll need around a 4GB USB key.

Will probably go that way - cheaper than iPod kit + ipod, and more flexible (easier to update songs).

Yep, you can get multiple USB sticks and swap em easily. When I got my system it was more to get a USB HU, and at the time I couldn't see the value compared to MP3 CD's. After all CD's are cheap enough

So you can dig through a glove box to find a CD you have written on and REMEMBER the tracks on the CD while driving, but a MP3 CD would be too hard? Like you said if you have CD's with albums in folders a quick flick and you should know what album it is and what tracks are on it (if you can do the same with seperate CD's) and you don't have to actually change CD's that often.

If you were REALLY keen, you could print out an album/track listing on small sheets of paper can mount then to the back of your sun visor, then quickly see what tracks are on any given CD (if you number them).... or you could just put the listing in the CD case with each CD so when you were stopped you could pick the CD you wanted and leve it in for a while, after all how often do you spend longer than a couple of hours at most in the car?

yep, much too hard. would require organising which artists/albums to put on each cd, then comes the issue of whether to organise by genre or alphabetically etc and then if you find a cd you like after you've created your collection, you cant just add it to one of the mp3 CDs and its just all too hard for me. i like the lucky dip of plunging my hand into the sea of cds But like i said, more organised people would probably find it much easier to use mp3 cds

when blu-ray discs become more mainstream, i can see them being useful. have all your music on one, and movies on another etc
