I have it setup as you have described (there are 5 holes per curved 'bracket'). Hope the pics below help to explain the current situation:

The fact that 1 curved bracket is shorter than the other is causing the angling. If I use both large curved brackets on 1 vent I can achieve horizontal slats, but then have two smaller curved brackets that are too small for the other vent to function correctly.

    Must be getting closer now

From memory you may need to flip the angled bit on it's y axis, then it's x axis.

I think that's what got me home. The short ones should be on the inside bits as well I think.

When you say the angled bit, do you mean the curved bracket with 5 holes? Anyone know if there are diagrams anywhere?

It is a bit of a head scratcher but there's only one way it can go back together to fit back in the dash.

I'll try and get some some detailed pics over the weekend of one in the car if that helps.

Thanks stickshift, that would be much appreciated

Feels like I've tried every option, but obviously there is a perfect combination.

I think at the moment I'm having trouble visualising how exactly the slats can be parallel with one piece smaller than the other.

I have a spare center vent piece. I've taken it apart and put it back together correctly. I'll snap some photos and post it up soon. I think it should help you.

Ok I've snapped a few photos. Here they are:

Picture 1: This is how it should look like where vents are in place

              Picture 2: Vents taken out

Picture 3: Taken from right side. Note the position of the small notch (in the middle)

Picture 4: Taken from left side. Similar position of the notch

Let me know if you need more pictures.

Lol... I did say it was a spare vent means that it's sitting in storage collecting dust.

Thanks Gene, the pics are much appreciated and definitely help!

Only question I have is about the size of the curved 5 hole plastic bits.

Maybe its just the angle of the pics, but it looks to me like you are using the two of the same sized curved bits on the one vent?

I was under the assumption that 1 small curved 5 holed plastic piece (Part No. U8 OR T5) and one large curved 5 holed plastic piece (Part No. R6 OR Q1) are used to make 1 vent?

Thanks everyone for all your help!

I had problems with the short and long ones too. I have 2 center vents and one set has short and long, the other long and long. I realised that different models have different length curved bit. But it doesn't matter, the top bit is just chopped off to accommodate for something. As long as the length from bottom of the plastic to the notch is constant, it should hold the vent up correctly. The easiest way is to fit just the two curve bits on the vent without the vents and see if it slots in correctly.

                        lol (Mine's R5) weird

I had no idea that the short and long curved bits vary on model to model.

Do you have any pics of the vent with the short and long curved piece setup?

I don't think the length from the bottom of the plastic to the notch is constant in my scenario. Hope the pics help:

Hey.. I just measured the spares and they all appear to be the same size. You would think they'd manufacture everything the same length wouldn't ya. Weird. I remember seeing one side smaller than the other. I think its currently in my car. The spare ones I have are all the same length. But from the pics it looks like you've got the setup correct.

Try this setup, two short and two long. From the picture you posted above, swap the left piece from the Right vent with the right piece from the left vent. If that makes sense.

Have tried two long and two short before. The problem is the two long work really well, but the two short barely work at all. The difference between the functionality of the two setups is like night and day and is definitely not intended to function in that manner

Does anyone have any diagrams/pics or further info of their setup using 1 small curved piece and 1 large curved piece for a vent?

Gene, any chance of you wanting to sell those vents of yours? Lost one side piece behind dash and the other disappeared under seat tracking. Quoted $200 by VW for replacement.
