Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Generally I would.
Does your service person report the remaining friction material thickness at each service? Can you recall what it was?

Mine was 9mm @ 15k; 8mm @ 30k; 7mm @ 45k; 6mm @ 60k (and quick visual through the wheels confirmed this to be correct). So unless the first 1/3 of the pad wears incredibly quickly then my best guess is that the pads are ~10mm.

/thinks..... aren't these pads tapered or something weird like that?

I got the info from various VW technical documents floating around the web, one of which is http://vwts.ru/brake/g5/g5_46-01.pdf

EDIT - Website doesn't approve of hotlinking, you'll have to copy and paste the link into your browser.

Alternatively, just download as much as you need from http://vwts.ru/vw_golf5_1k.html

      EDIT 2 - found a better document - http://docs.jayzone.eu/erWin/VW/Golf...unning%20Gear/

        Thanks. Interesting.

If it's any help the fronts are 1849 & the rears might be 1865 (insert appropriate makers prefix)

This afternoon on the way home from work I had the "Check Brake Pads" warning, bloody typical, two days until Christmas and this happens.

My question is: how long can I drive my car safely over the Christmas break?
LOL, I cannot believe the coincidence!!!

My check brake baps light came on the evening of Thursday 23rd... Just 3 days after it was at the mechanics looking into the damn racket coming from the secondary air intake.

          Just typical.

Anyone know where I can take it to have the pads changed that won't attribute a debt comparable to that of the US financial situation? I am in RADelaide (Adelaide).

          Cheers,
          Simon.

I had a brake warning come on after I reached 140kph. Not sure if speed had anything to do with it, as it never came on again. Rear pads needed changing after another 2000km though. So perhaps there's a bit of a buffer period build in.

If we're talking front pads, they are 14mm including the back plate, which is about 3mm.

I wouldn't worry if the light only just came on. You'll have plenty of time.

If they're fronts, get ready to be corn holed. Don't go original, talk to a pad supplier and get something else. Ferodo DS pads are good, and nowhere near as expensive as the originals - a little more aggressive with a bit less dust too.

Thanks for the info, what about disc/rotor suggestions?

I'm waiting for my mechanic to re-open, I wonder if he'll let me buy the parts and just have him fit them?

Easy. 328mm brembos and accompanying calipers. No more brake wear warning indicators to worry about either!
