  • Urgent: Brake pad warning need advice now !!!

    Hi all,

This afternoon on the way home from work I had the "Check Brake Pads" warning, bloody typical, two days until Christmas and this happens.

My question is: how long can I drive my car safely over the Christmas break?

do mk5s have just a digital sensor or the good old metal on metal rubbing noise indicator you get when the pads are too low?
just dont drive hard and leave more space ahead of you encase they are not ok...?

I know my Polo had a check break pad warning light come up in the dash when I was in Sydney earlier this year. I was able to get back to Canberra OK

            Thanks for the input mate.

Not planning any long trips, just wanna make sure I'm safe for a few days until service businesses are back to normal.

Liken it to your low fuel light. You can go for a while on it.

Unless you buy pads and put em in, easy job for piece of mind.

I queried my brake condition with my mechanic last week during a service and he stated that once the warning comes up you can go about 2000k's before they really need doing... obviously it would depend upon the type of driving you are doing etc as to just how far you would push it etc.

Excellent, now I'm not too worried, I'll get them done after the Christmas break

                  Cheers all for your input.

Not all of the 4 front pads always wear at the same rate.
Just shine a torch thru the spokes and ensure there is a couple of mm between the pad backing and the disk face on ALL 4.
Should then be OK as stated above.

Brake pad thickness is 14 mm on a Mk5 Golf. Wear limit is 2 mm.

In summary, you should still have about 4 mm of material left (or less) before you actually reach the metal backplate.

As long as you don't plan on any track days , you can get them replaced in the new year.

EDIT - brake pad wear warning light comes on at approximately 4 mm.

I think you'll find it's 9 or 10mm of friction material (14mm would include the backing plate I'd think).

I have it on good authority that 14 mm is the thickness not including the backplate. Trust me
