If you are "only" a Uni student, then don't complain you can't afford a GTI, neither can I.
You're only puttin in a nickel, but you want a dollar song.sigpic

i appreciate what ive got, its a great car. however with 215km on the clock, the repair bill for something to go wrong scares me a little. i have however decided to stick with the "old" girl til she hits about 250k.Scirocco R, APR 2+,VWR BBK,HP, QUAIFE, FORGE, VWR 18x9.

I have a work colleague who swapped his Commodore for a WRX. 12 months later he's going back to a Commodore. He's tired of the Police harassment. Constant licence checks, and he's 30yo.
Give yourself time to buy what you want, not what you can afford.
I buy cars that make me happy without modifying them, although the Golf has been flashed
I love driving Interstate with minimal fuel stops.
Whether you are in a GTI, R or 1.9TDI, the speed limit is still the same, and buying tickets to the Policeman's Ball, is a very expensive past time.

hey mate, im in the same boat, was really lucky i got my gti at a good price, its an 05 mk 5.. bear in mind that the shape went from 05-09
so its not "too old" shape wise so i rekon ur car still looks pretty fresh !
The mark 6 is indeed an evolution of the mk5, however not too different. I am in the same boat and have concluded to wait , save and enjoy my current car.. ive been reading mk5's have the 'fun' factor when it comes to driving whereas the mk6 is more refined? maybe VW wanted it to be addressed more for family use im not too sure.
i believe the new mk6 R's model is using the same engine with a different tune of the mk5 .. it makes sense as it still has a darn timing belt ($1100 ) just spent recently on mine. whilst the mk6 uses the timing chain.
in regards to FWD vs AWD... i think people tend to forget fuel usage and economy figures ? Ive got this car chipped and its giving me 9-10km per litre of fuel in city driving.... which i think is excellent?
going awd fair enough you get power.. but bear in mind fuel costs and the risk of you getting a fineand !!! speed limits are generally 60 anyway for these lovely cars not to be enjoyed to their full potential..
the gtis have more than enough up and go at stock. we just spoil ourselves rotten when we go for upgrades
I believe for uni students we're doing pretty well to be driving a golf and mk5's ! they are definently a gem !
remember the days of cars having different colour hoods and doors ! now thats what a uni student should be driving lol
is your transmission a dsg or manual?
all the best

If you think a 200kw FWD is pointless, you wouldn't be very impressed with a 300kw FWD.. Until you actually drove one, that is! Take it from me, they get more than enough traction to snap your neck off.
BTW, if you get the impression this thread is filled with FWD haters then let me dispel that myth.. I love mine. Then again mine's not entirely original any more.Last edited by kryten2001; 04-10-2011, 10:06 AM.

your both mine, i mean my mk5 tdi is chipped out and has the same power but more torque than a gti now, sure it doesnt sound fantastic but its till quick enough. i timed 0-100 in under 7 seconds the other day, which is pretty darn quick for something running 6l around town. i just dont like the idea of borrowing 10k, so sit my butt in the exact same car, with a petrol motor and nicer seats, its put me in a bad boat that what i have is nice, and to go nicer is bloody expensive.
as for uni students your right ! i remember 5 years ago anyone with p plates would be rocking a 1990 corolla, these days p platers are all in ve commodores, mazda 3's and stuff all under 5 years old, its crazy!!
the verdict is ill keep her,
and yeh fwd is okay! like really how many time sdo you launch so hard that the wheels spin, we are on public roads after all, and gti's arent drag cars, they are for comfy, quick, daily drivers. with the odd track dayScirocco R, APR 2+,VWR BBK,HP, QUAIFE, FORGE, VWR 18x9.

I bought a Golf VI TDI for the missus, and it's not bad - but it's nothing compared to a GTI. Good torque, awesome fuel economy and nice and refined - but a performance car it is not.
But you shouldn't worry about such things. You've got a good car, save your pennies to enjoy your life whilst you're student. Times are tough out there and you shouldn't be taking on any debt for something like a car until you can easily afford to pay it.... Enjoy that awesome fuel economy and spend your change on what all uni students should - eating and drinking. Don't waste it on car payments, fuel and mods.
Far out man if I had a Golf5 when I was in uni I would have been over the moon. We all used to have ****ty 70's datsuns when I was studying.... We were lucky if they held together!

Oh and if you don't think GTI's can be drag cars, you've yet to have your eyes opened! Many run their GTI's in the 11 second barrier, that's no slouch for a car that's built to go around corners and not in a straight line.
Put some coilovers, brakes and chip/larger turbo in a GTI and you've got yourself one very capable machine.
But that comes later mate. You've got plenty of time for all that crap later. Right now you're better off playing the conservative game.Last edited by kryten2001; 04-10-2011, 07:29 PM.

i would have jumped on the manual one too ! lowtdi.
but as kryten2001 says i rekon we should save it for drinks n food
i only imagine that its going to get harder for dealers to move their cars shortly as times are getting tough again... just like in 2008 when fuel was 97centsgosh i miss those days
but long story short. just service the car. i rekon you cant do anything more. if its bound to break it will, obviously the risk goes higher but theres always a risk. ive seen brand new x5's that are 100K on the back of a tow trunk.... when they first came out so i wonder what the hell is bmw and other manufacturers charging us for.
i think $45 K (auto) on a stock gti is alot of money to fork out for a car thats not too large even $60k for a golf r... even $90K for top of the range prados :S ..... its ALOT of money. when you think about it. they are nice cars. but i guess in a way just as much prone to any mechanical/electric problems as the rest.
the only way they will come down is when people stop paying these silly prices for it. call me conservative but thats my view.
and yes i dont understand where the p platers are affording ve commodores /mazda3's im assuming help from the parents which is good on them but its important to realise that we look lower and appreciate how
the car should be shaved 10g's and maybe we'd all be happier
but see how you go. only you can make the decision !

A GTI is a long way from being a diesel with nice seats, the engine is always going to have the extra flexibility over the diesel, regardless if your comparing stock vs stock or tuned vs tuned the GTI is always going to beat it by at least 2-3 seconds to 100 which in the real world is a big difference its like comparing a 4 cylinder to a 8 cylinder.
I face the same thing you do next year which is a life of full time uni study (maybe, still not 100% sure if i want to switch a 2minute noodle budget) and one of my main worries have been about if i can afford to keep the GTI or not, which is why i have ensured all the major services have been done and paid for the next 3-5 years, seriously if you can get past the water pump and timing belt the servicing on vw's is not too bad. If it becomes too hard, i will be selling up and buying a CamryMKV GTI

Only mod is a used power box I scored for $200....
In standard form the engine is capable, but not a great performer. It's very easy to unleash more power from a turbo diesel.
