    Hi Guys,

I am new here. I just wonder if it is worth to purchase the tyre from the state? Do we have to worry about how to import it?

    Thanks,

      hi Sam,

buying from Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels is worth it for more expensive tyres, but cheaper tyres might not be worth the effort.

You would have to go through the comparison.

on top of tirerack's very attractive price, you will need to add:

      * around $250 for freight,
      * about 8% for the cost of payment via a bank (as they wont accept your credit card)
      * import duty and GST if you go over $1k (which is unlikely on your Jetta)
      * add around $20/tyre to get them fitted locally.

        Hi Gareth,

Thank you for you info. I went to Tire Rack and done the tyre selection. There are 2 brand that match what i am looking for. The Michelin PSS and Continental Extreme Contact DWS. I have compared the 2 tyre, it seem that the Michelin is a much better then Conti, but i guess i am only doing a everyday driving with the price diff of almost half. I guess the Conti is good enough. Are you able to give me some opinion?

I do aware that if i get it in Perth, it will cost around $500 each for Michelin. Therefore, i don't mind to get the Michelin (since it is so cheap over the state). Have you ever ordered from Tire Rack before?

One last question on my Jetta, the speed rating is 92w. I guess it is ok to put 92y right?

        Thanks.

for everyday driving, I'd recommend getting whichever of the good ones that is the cheapest.

If I had the choice, I'd by the Goodyear asymmetic 2, but based on price, I'm going to get the Asymmetirc 1, as they are still a brilliant tyre and significantly cheaper

If you are going to get the Contis get the DW not the DWS. You probably aren't going to be driving on snow.

              I was offered Goodyear Assy1's for $280 a tyre (225/45/17).
I've been waiting months for the Assy2's, "still none in this size in the country" I keep being told

Can't wait much longer, I guess PS3's will have to do.

Tell me about it. I ordered 4x F1A2s in 18" for my Jetta two months ago ... still waiting.

The Conti Extreme Contact DW gets a good rap most of the time. For the cheap price Tirerack has them, I'd be going these

Heaps cheap for that big size (are they for the RS4?). Did you check the production date?

On a side note - Got my 225/40 R18 Continental DW tires last week. Very happy so far, much quieter and comfortable than the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs I was running before. They aren't as grippy in the dry (but still very good) but are better in the wet (much wider channels in the middle of the tire).

The steering feel is completely different going from those 235/40 R18 to the 225. Heaps lighter and no more scrub at the back with people in the rear.

Do note that the particular Dunlops you had previously were track-biased road tyres (a la RE-11, RS-3, KU36, AD08, etc).

The Continental DW is very much a normal road tyre, so they should indeed offer better aquaplaning, wear and NVH characteristics (likewise the F1A2 and PSS).

Reading around various BMW M and Porsche forums, the explanation they offer for why track-biased road tyres are heavier than normal road tyres, is that their rigid sidewall reinforcement generally comes at the expense of weight.

Also note that new tyres initially lighten the steering load. Normal road tyres also tend to put less rubber physically on the road than track tyres (even given the same size) which also lightens steering feel.

Can indeed confirm that Tire Rack is now selling the F1A2.

However, you may want to buy them sooner rather than later (depending on how the AUD is doing) because if it's anything like the PSS, they might not last at that price (introductory offer to get 'em quickly in the marketplace, then return to regular prices).

Yep, they are an autocross oriented tyre I believe.

Interesting, thanks. 235->225 would have saved a fair bit of weight too, plus the Dunlops were chunky for 235s anyway.

Killer price $715 for a set. Should get them for under $1000 with shipping now that Christmas has past and the shipping rates should go down.

Not really into high performance tyres. just quality drive and, having been in a MkVI, being able to hear the music.
I am writing here as this seems the most active MkV tyre thread.
Feel free to re-direct if you know a better place.
Running Conti Sports Contact 2 from new, now at 55,000k.
Just noticing all four are showing the beginnings of outside wear.
I understand this isnt that unusual.
Manual says 320-350kpa, 33-36psi. But been running 30-32 PSI, oops.
Tyres are marked 'outside-inside', but don't appear uni-directional.
Question is can they be rotated on the rims...? Or are we up for newies?
