Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. I'm also up for new rubber and tossing up between Michelin Pilot Sport 2 or Pilot Sport 3 as a good performance/cost compromise for my needs. I've read good reports on PS2 however mixed reports on PS3. Has anyone here run PS3's on GTI 17" denvers?

I don't think that there are "mixed" reports of the PS3. They're a good tyre, and probably better in every way than the PS2.

The thing is, when the PS2 came out, they were the hands down winner (there was no F1A, conti's were on CSC2 etc).
But the PS3 needs to compete against the F1A & F1A2 and the CSC3 and CSC5P etc. The competition has just stepped up is all.

Michelin say the PS2 and PS3 have similar performance, with wet performance (the PS2's weakness) particularly improved upon. One or two testers felt the latter to be a less sporty tyre than the former, but that's because the PS2 still remains (after all these years) a great road tyre in the dry.

That aside, you may have some issues finding a set in 225/45 R17, as Michelin start to slowly ramp down production for the PS2 to make way for its sucessor, the PSS.

there is a big tyre test in the June issue of wheels granted they used a KIA to test but over a variety of different test the PS3 came up trumps. MICHELIN Pilot Sport 3 wins 2011 Wheels Tyre Test / News / News & Promotions / Home - www.michelin.com.au

given the images used on the michelin website for these tyres one would assume that the PS2 and PS3 are aimed more at the golf end of the market.

I bought four goodyear assymetrics earlier this year. Longevity on country roads a problem for mine, 2 already have had to be replaced.Grip and handling great, but i would be lucky to have gotten 15k out of them.

lol adam, I stopped subscribing to Wheels a long time ago. the fact that they used a Kia for a tyre test might expalin why

at least you know its all tyre and not the car if you getting any performance improvement, the other issue i picked up going back through these tests is that by virtue of aligning with a tyre shop many brands are excluded from these test are the chains don't stock or push some brands.

Looks like I opened up a lot of opinion on the tyres!

Had a feeling that the PSS would be one of the better road tyres in the dry (I always hope it doesnt rain!) I can get these delivered (for 4) from Tyrerack for $1100.

I just got quoted $460 a tyre for the new F1 Ass 2 in Aus!

By the sounds of it, if I can get the PS3 for $269 as previously mentioned on here, they seem like the easiest option at the minute! Then perhaps the next purchase (once car has had some changes!) I will purchase the PSSs. doesnt sound like I am going to go far wrong with them..big thing for me and the pitiful driving I do at the minute is road noise

Yeah - until the F1A2 is available on tirerack.com, the Michelin are the better value. Typically the F1A is the lowest price of all the top tyres from tirerack, simply because they buy such huge quanitities... the problem is when the hell are they going to run out of them and get the F1A2? lol.

As a quick reply I have just been told (in Aus) that the Continental SC3 are an awesome tyre...and on sale at $358 a tyre?! the F1A2 are $412...time to keep calling around and then working out if I want to go down the Tirerack route to save some dollar

Yeah, the Continental ContiSportContact 3 are very good and competed just below the level of the original F1A based on overall results. The F1A2 is clearly superior, but in fairness to Continental, the CSC 3 is the last gen and the CSC 5P is their current generation max performance tyre. The problem is that the CSC 5P is not available in any size to fit non-19" Talladega option Golf R's (i.e. no 18, 17, or 16" versions suitable for the Golf). But I'd quite happily have the CSC 3 on my car if it came down to them being significantly better value than the F1A2.

i've just noticed a "closeout" of stock on the F1A @tirerack for $80 per tyre... the catch is they are 2007 production.
i have heard it said tyres have a "shelf life" even when not fitted to a car. Is this true?

Yes. Rubber in particular degrades with time, though these days tyres are made from a mix of compounds so no idea what the realistic shelf life is these days.

For what it's worth Goodyear's wet weather tyres that the NASCAR Nationwide series used at Montreal in 2008 were made in 1999/2000, and whilst Goodyear admitted they were close to their expiry date, they still ran them. So tyres can last quite a while... though who knows how different composition effect things...

I'm sure the F1A of 2007 are still better than anything else you could get for $80 though

from what i gathered, the savings over Conti SC3 from Tirerack vs Tempe / Taleb Tyres are not much.

the SC3 is $250-$280 each in 225 40 18, 92W, fitted and balanced from Taleb or Tempe Tyres.

the SC5 is already available at $300 each for 225 40 18, 92Y from Tempe.
