Rats in the Ranks

Just returned from a 3 week trip overseas. Car started fine, no issues, then a series of warning messages on the screen.

Took it to Dealer who scanned it and couldn't find anything immediately, advised to bring it back later in the week.

Yesterday they found that the electrical wireing had been chewed through in many different places with plenty of rat poo in the area.

They replaced it all and all seems fine at this stage.

Placed heaps of Rat bait in the garage now.

Yep, bit of a problem in areas down here in the ACT too. We've had wiring chewed out in our bushfire vehicles, mainly battery leads, engine insulation and any exposed wiring underneat. Theuy don't seem to chew the brake lines, maybe they don't like the taste of brake oil (thank goodness). Had mice build a nest under my Subaru cat converter heat shield, talk about a stink after I had driven a few k! Also got rat/mice baits in the shed now.

Also check your air filter I can see on many cars that they make a nest in the air filter box and snack on the air filter element. I installed extra screen from the old filters at the front of the intake to stop the rodents from getting in.



...when they get thirsty they go and chew on windscreen washer hoses and overflows from the radiator, so watch out.

Oh yeah they love wiring looms, sharpens their teeth. Pollen filters and air filters they love them. Had one eat that much on a Gt3 Porsche then tried to get back out the hole in the chassis/inner guard and got stuck and died there, hmm was a lovely smell in a 997 GT3 for sure

Had this alot up in the NT too... Rats building nests in the bonnet insulation... Also, ants, for some reason love eating the glue that holds relays and fuse boxes together...

^^ Piss funny about the rat in the GT3... Had a similar thing with a mouse and a 5 man ration pack in our APC once. Although he didn't starve to death, mice don't agree with GP boots...

Throw some bait bags up there before your house burns down! The bait is tastier then your insulation on your power cables.

Baits are good, but when the rat crawls away into nests or holes to die (I have learned this lesson the hard way), and they tend to stink up the house. Traps are better for roof spaces...

True, the content of the baits is supposed to make them seek out water and hopefully die elsewhere but my experience in baiting in my garage has seen at least half the mice die behind something in my garage and stink for a few days until the maggots set in. They can't get into the walls so it's not too big a problem but in the roofspace it could be as you can't get away from the stench.
