if you can that'd be good.
You can buy the genuine factory extended warranty anytime before your warranty expires.
You can buy the genuine second hand extended warranty anytime (well until the warranty is no longer valid) after your warranty expires.

Details are in the warranty thread.

After reading this, makes me worry about getting a 2nd hand dsg gti.

Esp if the price above is what it would cost to fix out of warranty.

Should I start looking at getting a manual one instead?

If what you are saying is true then a recon dsg would cost around US$4k which is bugger all really. Then I wouldnt be too concerned about buying a dsg astro.

It won't cost that much to fix, VW are replacing the box with a whole new one. The only real wear and tear area is the DSG clutch packs which can be replaced reasonably cheaply but should last the life of the car, the mechatronics can play up but this doesn't require a gearbox replacement or even sometimes a mechatronics replacement as the car might just have a harsher shift between two gears. Under warranty it's worth getting done but out of warranty I'd be considering living with it.

And as more DSG cars get wrecked and our wreckers get their act together it will be easy to buy a second hand gearbox and fit that.

Ive serviced MANY with DSG and have only seen 1 needing replacement due to a dealer stuff up, anyway it had coolant in it. Ive changed 1 Mech unit but sent a few for flashes and /or replacement mechs units. However for clunk and chatter ive done 2 dual mass flywheels. I rate the box very highly. Im in the market for another dub and will most likely be DSG.
Just remember u read most of the horror stories on forums.

I love the dsg, its awesome, never had any issue until this rattle and now their replacing the whole thing? I rekon their just doing it to be on the safe side. If they replaced only the flywheel and that didnt fix it the cost to drain out the dsg oil, pull it all apart again, tie up a hoist for another 2 weeks etc is probably not worth it so they figure may as well just put a whole new box in. This is the only explanation I can come up with for a complete replacement.

Yeah you probably have something there mate, im an ex dealer tech and they get next to no diagnostic time, there is still a lot of good guys in that system and they dont get a chance to go the hog with the diagnostics, being independent we can but cant justify the time, swings and roundabouts really. so back to what you said you are almost certainly right mate.
                  Cheers

Just to update, I contacted VW Solitaire today to get an ETA on my car and they advised now it will take 3 months to get a new trans! So instead VW Sydney are rebuilding my box. hmmm. I hope they know what they're doing! If this thing drives like a dog when I get it back there'll be hell to pay!

Yeah the DSG are replaced on an exchange basis, some i have fitted were rebuilt. Most noises are from the dual mass flywheel, there is a limit to how much play there can be. I removed a flywheel a few weeks ago and all the teeth which connect to the clutch were gone! the flywheel was just spinning inside the clutch.

I replace roughly 1 mechatronics a month and this year Ive replaced about 6 DSG, including 2 new 7 speeds. And 1 manual box which tore the crown wheel off the diff centre!
