Buying a Golf GT. What to look for?

You're right, poyta - the chains do eventually stretch, but the tensioners take up any slack (some do it automagically - but I don't know if the TSI is one of those). Rubber belts are much quieter, but can suddenly snap if not changed very regularly (talk to an Alfa owner about timing belts and servicing!). So yes, maintenance is unavoidable with either system. Not a bad thing, really

if you are up for it (and you should at the very least go drive one) why not include the TDI GT Sport in your search?
for example this beauty:
with 49,000kms, DSG Gearbox,Leather seats,sat nav--> it's listed at $26k
Used VOLKSWAGEN GOLF Private Seller Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au
looks the goods to me.
OR (if you are willing to fork out 29k and like the GTI):

Yeah i did think about the TDI but i am too much of a purist to go to a Diesel. Plus i love the sound of a supercharger too much!Originally posted by MariusGT View Postif you are up for it (and you should at the very least go drive one) why not include the TDI GT Sport in your search?

Before you cross the GT TDI off your list at least take one for a test drive, you will be very surprisedOriginally posted by muggo05 View PostYeah i did think about the TDI but i am too much of a purist to go to a Diesel. Plus i love the sound of a supercharger too much!

Not to mention the fuel economy ( I average at least 800-900 k's per tank) you'll never get those figures from a TSI
As others have mentioned, if you did decide on a GT TDI it would be preferable to have warranty and to be able to have the option of extending NEW car warranty if possible just in case the injector issue comes up later. I've had mine from new in 2008 and so far I haven't had any major issues (fingers crossed). You mentioned loving the sound of a supercharger, have a listen to the raw grunt of the GT TDI, I still get a buzz from it now
Happy hunting

hmmm ok sounds like i've been a bit narrow minded.
was more thinking of the sportiness of being able to let it wind right out like you can in a petrol.
if one falls into my price bracket i will have a look at it.
Thanks for the bump!!

You won't get to wind it right out because being a diesel it only revs to 4500rpm but its certainly very sport - most people who I take for a drive start off thinking it will drive like a truck and are genuinelly surprised how sporty it is.Originally posted by muggo05 View Posthmmm ok sounds like i've been a bit narrow minded.

here here Russ and Poyta.
go and drive one like i said.
if you need some more convincing then how about:
Power 147kW @ 5100rpm--------188kW @ 6000rpm--------125kW @ 6000rpm--------125kW @ 4200rpm--------184kW @ 6300rpm
Torque 280Nm @ 1800-5000rpm 330Nm @ 2500-5000rpm 240Nm @ 1750-4500rpm 350Nm @ 1750-2500rpm 320Nm @ 2500-3000rpm
5 cars listed above. 4 VW's and 1 Audi. see if you can guess which one has highest torque?
while you're at it guess which figures belong to which car.....Last edited by MariusGT; 02-04-2011, 12:40 PM.Current - MY16 2015 Octavia VRS Wagon 220 tsi DSG Corrida Red, tech, Leather, 18" black

That's cheap?
Mine owes 24k now, so if I sold it it would go for that, or less...
I would guess most of the GT's on finance would owe about that these days, mines at 76k too.2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |

Very true, I went into the dealer to buy a twincharged 1.4, and one drive of the TDI and I signed then and there! I didn't even want to test drive a poxy diesel at the time.....Originally posted by Russ59 View PostBefore you cross the GT TDI off your list at least take one for a test drive, you will be very surprised
