Thanks for all of your replies.
Just wondering if $45000 driveaway sounds good for a GTI with DSG, Leather and Parking Sensors?

and would it be worth waiting for a MY08 GTI with the upgraded large format multi-function display?

The best way to work out your car price is to follow the simple formula.

            car price
+ add up all optionals inc metallic paint
            then discount by 10%.
            add stamp duty
            add rego
            add dealer delivery.

and you will get a reasonable price that you should be heading towards.

its also a good guide to work out if theyre giving you a good deal or a bad deal.

i bought my car from essendon vw in melbourne through a lady called vilma. theres a few others in golfmkv that have bought their cars through her as well. if you go in, id probably ask to see her and then tell her you were recommended so she can look after you.

also try Rex Gorell in Geelong, they will deliver the car to you in Melbourne with a full tank of petrol (or diesel hehehe) I managed to get a better price than my car consultant for once. Like wodonga I think they have lower overheads compared to the big smoke etc.

Hi thanks for the info, are they willing give the best deal on phone or you have to head to their geelong office to talk about?

I did all my dealings on the phone / fax told the guy what I wanted then asked for best price, luckily they had the car I wanted in stock, as mentioned they delivered it to Melbourne. Paid deposit on CC then bank cheque.

                      Another thing is timing.

Try to co-ordinate your visit within a day or two of the end of the month. Or, like I did with the end of the financial year. Dealers work on bonuses from the importer where they can receive substantial bonuses, depending on sales volume. You can be lucky if you happen to have a dealer who's very close to a bonus level - he may be likely to take a hit on the price to secure a lower price on his next batch of cars.

Admittedly it's all an unknown formula, but if you can, time your visits close to the 30th.. If you see 2 or 3 dealers, you'll get a feel for which one is more keen to get one more sale.

                      Good luck...

this works only if you are paying cash or have finance ready and they have stock so you can take immediate delivery (ie. before the end of the month). as they only count delivered cars as sales.

Always good to purchase from your local dealer and where you intend to get your car serviced. The aftersales service is generally better from the selling dealer and it may be worthwhile paying a little more initially. Just think of it as extra insurance.
