My GTI won't be here till late August so I assume the current updates they're doing will be done pre-delivery

Thats a great idea except that a manufacturer in most cases only does a recall when it needs to be done!

There is probably code in the ECU that will cause you problems in the future

If I was you I'd definently get the recall done

Then get the ECU reflashed again. In the case of Powerchip they are reflashing the ECU's for free after the recall.
