  • APR ReMap - Has VW found it at service time?

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I'm a newbie, that's my excuse.

Just need to know from anyone with an APR, or any other remap, if VW has discovered it during a scheduled service?

I know you can switch back to standard tune with the cruise switch but surely VW mechanics are onto this and test the cars when they come in?

I heard that VW Australia are considering upholding full warranty for cars with the Oettinger Remap on the GTI...has anyone heard if this has happened?

Anyone with APR or other remap have any gripes with the product? AND have you had any mention of it at service time by VW mechanics or have you had servicing done elsewhere?

    hey mate,,

its funny this question.if you buy a new car from vdub ,they have offered a chip upgrade at a premium on top and warrenty is validated.if you buy the car then get the chip yourself, they dont honour the warrenty,or blame the chip from brake probs to exhaust probs.
all depends on your dealer and how strict they are.
Im sure it has been discussed before and someone will maybe still have the link. keep us up to date with how you go on this one!!!!

I know that this is going to sound obvious, but not sticking a badge on it saying APR will help your chances of going undetected.

Since I have been involved with VW forums, I have not heard of a warranty fully voided by reflash tuning, although VW have the right to.

VW's apparent common-sense approach is pretty damned impressive - especially when compared to Subaru, who will void your warranty if you even think about modifying your car.

Bill Buckles VW voided NIkola's warranty completely because he installed a CAI.

If you blow the DV valve and are chipped - how does the performance compare to stock? If it feels shit, and they fix it and performance improves - will the dealer ever know??? (they might just think the performace improvement is due to new working valve. Or is there an audible difference to a...

Ive taken mine to 2 seperate dealers and had entire conversations with them about the reflash, have had a few warranty issues but not engine related. I reckon if you blew a turbo or gearbox you might have some concerns...i reckon would vary on who you are talking to and what sort of a day they are having.

As far as detecting goe's....they "apparently" can't detect with their software however, how hard is it to check? You can tell by mucking around with switching on APR reflash....just do it and wear the slight risk...

Life's too short to not be re-flashed

Ive had my APR reflash for 2 years and 80,000 kms by the way

My dealer is positivelt encouraging me to do as much as possible...even going so far as to chase stuff down for me!!! They use the car for displays on open days and things like that and "turn a blind eye" by way of a contra deal.

Peer pressure is expensive isn't it???

The local dealer here is fine with flashing as far as I can see. They have driven the car. You can get the optional security code added whereas you have to put a pin code through via the cruise switch to access the program. My car has this feature.
All the best with your decision, I have found no negatives with the programs whatsoever!

From what i know a flash tune cannot damage anything unless there is a blocking system used so people cannot steal the code they flash into the ECU

At the moment there is a Recall on FSI engines. It is a software update for the engine ECU. So VW is reprogramming ECU's.

If the vehicle has been flashed you will loose it.

If the tune in place has a blocking feature it rules out the update or could damage the control unit.

Yes VW can take the codes out of the ECU and test if it has been changed

But why would a dealership do that at servicing?

The grey area is people like Powerchip offer a limited warranty on their work and VW will still warrant the vehicle. But that also can leave a grey area if something goes wrong that could be effected by the retune.

The gains of a re-tune are great. But I would stick to a big brand like Powerchip (they do not lock their code). It is a gamble but one that is maybe worth taking especially in turbo charged vehicles.

Surely thats invitation enough to do a warranty covered turbo setup?

If you need to know anything APR / oettinger related - give me a call - we have over 350 GTI's / Jettas flashed around the country, and a lot of them have the recall for the VW software.

Most dealers don't care - they dont look for it - I have seen the flashing proceedure myself (had my car done last Friday) - the 5052 scan tool only looks for a part number & prompts the user to upgrade or not!

They dont even test drive it. You will lose you software upgrade though, its a simple proceedure to drop back in & have it redone (with the updated VW sections of the code) at the same time!

I have personally spoken to at least 6 VW service managers to clarify the proceedure for them - none of them made any fuss about an upgrade at all.

                        Quote from the best one

"We are hear to service & repair the car & get it back to the customer in the shortest time possible - thats the way we get to sell them another car in a couple of years - we don't have time, nor do VW pay us to spend an hour looking for possible modifications......."

                              Thanks for the feedback all
My GTI won't be here till late August so I assume the current updates they're doing will be done pre-delivery
In any case, I think one of my first drives will be to have the remap done.
Can't wait to line up my misguided friend in his SS (VZ) to show him what a German "Shopping Trolley" (as he calls it) can really do. He walks around singing "Cubes glorious cubes" (to the tune of food glorious food)...I'm really gonna enjoy shutting him up.
