I installed a Dension 100 gateway a few weekends ago. Its all installed now but after the time I had doing it I wish i had never even attempted it myself. Clips got broken, screws got lost, tools got lost in the internal black hole inside the car. It ended up taking me about 10hours(spread across 2 days) as I had to take the center console and the glovebox out as well...Im sure there isnt anything wrong with the DIY but im just a spastic.
Has any one else found that after putting the faceplate around the stereo and climate control back together that it doesnt fit as flush as before? Im assuming it has something to do with the metal clips that hold it in and the fact that some of them broke when taking it (I was being gentle) and i had to glue them back in.
I need to get the serial number off my RCD 500 head unit as i didn't get the radio pin off the previous owner, now do i have to completely remove the radio or can the serial number be read once the top surround has been removed ?
i had mine out just the other week, pretty sure it had to be right out to read the serial number... saying that it was not difficult to remove and you should be able to read the number without having to disconnect any wiring...
good luck
Just did a full install of an RNS-510, MDI and Bluetooth module into my Mk5 GTI and I must say it was all fairly smooth process! (Although the previous unit that was in there was a very shoddy built aftermarket brand, something 3000 model I believe. So I had to fix a few things there before putting the rest in.)
There wasn't too many guides on how to install factory MDI and factory BT kits so a lot of it was done by myself. Quite a lot of guesswork too. Either way the end result was great, the RNS-510 functions properly (Version F unit), the BT works a charm (even the A2DP streaming from my iPhone 4S). As well as the MDI so I can also charge the iPhone using that as it has that capability.
The only thing left for me to do is code the unit using VGDS/VAGCOM which I am getting done later today (it's 2:55am now). Boy it was a great experience though! (Oh yeah and my GPS location is a bit off too, might need to relocate the antenna)
Thanks for this wonderful instructional thread on how to do the install!
