Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

City driving with dsg

ok heres my 2 cents worth. I have driven quite a few dsg vw's. I rekon there are only two vw that the dsg is really suited to. The R32 and the R36. These cars have both got a lot and I mean a lot of low down torque followed by mid range punch and oh yes and top end power as well. This means that(and I know the dsg can be moody) it doesnt' matter what speed you are doing or what gear you are in, there is always a smooth effortless abundance of useable power. I have always favoured manuals in my 25 years of driving but nothing can touch this superb piece of engineering. And having said that the newer dsg in the R is quite good partly masking the turbo lag but really at the end of the day, the v6's and the dsg's are a match made in heaven. Why do you think the Bugatti Veyron has a DSG? Its only the fastest most powerful production car in the world.Volvo S60 RD T6

No doubt the unit used by the Veyron truly is a "superb piece of engineering", but even though a double clutch gearbox is utterly suited to the philosophy of a car like the Veyron, it doesn't automatically make it the best solution for every car.
However, I agree that the immense power and torque of the Veyron's engine would mask the idiosyncrasies of whatever gearbox it's attached to.
Or just overwhelm the driver so much that he or she won't care how the gearbox operates.

Not denying Veyron or DSG are marvelous engineering, but not every one has 1 million dollars spare.
The improvement I am talking about hardly cost anything per production unit. Just software re-design. I have APR stage I done on my car. The car has more than enough power to handle daily drive, but just the gear box often select the wrong gear. I happened to be a photographic enthusiast. Let me compare two of my hobby
Jetta cost me 43k; my D700 cost me 3k
Jetta has 6 gear; D700 has dozens and dozens of aperture and shutter speed combination
Jetta has a dumb gear box; D700 4096-segment sensor doing pattern recognition based on a database which is built from the data after analyzing thousands of successful photo
Jetta often chose the wrong gear, sometimes very wrong; I am yet to see wrong exposure one after thousands of pictures.

Some people love DSG, some hate it, as I've posted previously I'm on my second DSG eqipped car, have driven 80,000 km in them and never found a problem. I've also spent a number of weeks recently driving a 125TSI and 103TDI Tiguan with auto boxes and can only say the DSG is light years ahead of a conventional auto.06 Jetta 2.0TFSI Killed by a Lexus!

I am afraid that you mis-understood my point behind my analogy. Those small consumer goods advanced so much. Nowadays, most professional photographers(taking picture for livings) relys on in camera auto-explosure. While can you think any F1 drivers use full-auto gear box without paddle shift?
DSG is briallant in mechanical wise, but this doesn't matter if it can not select the right gear or shift at right point of time. It is still a dumb gear box as many convertional auto gear box before it.

Not sure how to get it reset. If its under warranty take it to vw and tell them its playing up. People here who have had their's reset are very happy with the results.
My facts are based purely on experience. The rev matching changes are far superior to any slushbox I have ever driven, even better than the famous ZF six speed.Volvo S60 RD T6

I've heard you can reset the 'learning' feature by disconnecting the accelerator pedal for a minute or so, that way the DSG basically goes back to the way it was from factory as opposed adapting to your driving style.
Also, the DSG isn't something to rave about. It's better than a standard auto, but not as connected as a manual. If you want a manual, get a manual. If you want an auto, be smart and get a DSG.
