  • R32 steering wheel swap in a 2006 2.0FSI DSG Jetta

    Guys,
I have a question that hopefully can be answered simply without creating a huge debate. I am in the throws of purchasing an R32 MFSW for my 2006 2.0FSI Jetta. The buttons on both wheels are the same with the exception of the addition of the DSG paddles on the R32 wheel going in. I assume that it should be just a clean swap and then getting the car hooked up to the computer to turn on the DSG paddle functionality. Is this the case? If so, has anyone in Brisbane pulled out the airbag, and have they got the VAGCOM program to turn on the paddles. Any advice is appreciated. I am waiting on a call from VW to get me a price to do it. I am a little hesitant to pull the airbag off this thing myself following the guide online, although I have done this sort of thing on a ford falcon before, but the VW's are a little bit more technologically advanced than the falcon and I am scared of causing fault codes once the battery is hooked back up. Thanks for your time.

I got the local mechanic to do my swap too even though the DIY guide was very helpful. Just a bit too worried about the airbag accidentally going off. If it went off on him then it would be covered. Also I wanted to have records that a Pro put it in case I ever had any insurance or warranty issues. Considering it only cost $80 it was well worth it.

Thanks for the reply guys but I think that I am going to give up on this one. I have jsut talked to my local VW dealership and they said that they have tried to do a couple of swaps and they couldn't get the codes to hold and they had all sorts of problems. I am really disappointed but that is the way it goes I guess. I would hate to spend all that money for the steering wheel paddles to not work with my DSG gearbox, which is the reason for the purchase.

I'm sure Essendon VW in Melbourne were offering a deal to fit the GTI wheel with paddles to Passat diesels and other Golf models etc.

Believe me. I am trying. I guess it is not a common thing to do so it is hard to find someone who understands. Alot of the time I find that us forum users know alot more than the guys that are trained in this stuff!!

Given the TFSI Jetta is such a close relative of the GLI Jetta I'd expect it's not much different from the GLI/GTI to code.

Try Jimmy at Alba European. He doesn't fear to tread where the dealers won't! Post up a link to the on line guide too. I'd like to have a read.

If he is known as Jmac on here, then I have already sent him a private message but have had no response. I talked to a second dealer this afternoon who said they tried to do the same thing with an eos a couple of months ago but spent hours trying to get it to work. They gave up and the owner of the car didn't get his or her wish. It sounds so simple and yet it looks like it is a complex task.
Below is a couple of links to "how to" for the steering wheel change. Knock yourselves out, if you dare!!

I read the first page of the vortex thread. That was plenty for me. I don't need to know the answer enough to read it deeply...

Doesn't look very hard assuming it works.

Fitting the steering wheel isn't the issue here. It is getting it to work that is the problem

I might have missed the point but I thought that the guy only had to change the guts of the steering wheel controller and then code it accordingly?

I did note that it was tiptronic not DSG.

VCDS has softcoding help popups. These have a fair bit of information, I have coded a MK6 GTI to switch on some features following them.

Still reckon if anyone can work it out Jimmy can.

Yeah but I thought that he was going from a non MFSW to a MFSW so he therefore had to change the steering wheel control module. With my setup, both wheels have exactly the same buttons on the wheel except for the addition of the DSG paddles. I'm not game to purchase the wheel just at this stage to not have it work. Hopefully Jmac gets back to me before the steering wheel is sold to someone else. I really would love to have the DSG paddle shift. From talking to both dealerships, getting the coding to stick was apparently the problem. Anyhow, we'll see what happens. Thanks for the discussions. Forums are a great learning ground for cars. I have learnt so much and bought things cheap through the forum I am on with my falcon.
