Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • start car without brake pedal engaged??

    Hi all,

I'm pretty sure that if you don't have the brake pedal pressed in, the car shouldn't allow you to start the engine???

On my TDI, I can start the engine without my foot on the brake. I've also just realised that the cruise control doesn't work, which leaves me thinking that maybe there's an issue with some sort of switch that senses if the brake is engaged or not???

I think that only works on Alfa with selespeed, or on Audi with smart key with push on start.

Not on Golf with normal turnkey start as far as I know...

Yes there is an issue with your brake pedal switch which explains the cruise control not working. I would take it into a vw dealer sooner rather then later..

I know you can start the engine without the brake pedal pressed in the DSG (if you're in 'P' or 'N'), but you can't move the shifter until it's pressed.

Oh okay...mine is the DSG, so maybe it is okay after all.......I can start the engine, but can't move it out of 'P' until I engage the brake.

just have to work out why the cruise control doesn't work then.

Might seem like a dumb question, but have you flicked the switch on the top edge of the left stalk so the cruise light comes on in the instrument cluster?

yeah....tried flicking the switch on and off multiple times....no light comes on in the cluster.

Reading around it seems that a faulty switch/stalk is fairly common...might have to get that looked at.

Mine starts fine in P with no foot on the brake and my cruise control works fine. So your CC problem may be unrelated.

The only fault I have in VCDS is rear-left door missing but my passengers assure me that it's there and the window works fine so I don't worry about it.

What does your manual tell you?

You mean the same switch that is used for the brake lights which is pretty easy to test, are you brake lights working or not?
