Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk5 R32 opening the 'settings menu'

    Hi all,

Ive tried various different ways of doing this, with no luck...so hopefully someone has an easy solution!

Im trying to get into the settings menu on the combo display (to then get into the side mirror tilt function, and coming/going lights settings). On page 18 of booklet 3.1, it says all I need to do is turn on the ignition, press OK on the steering wheel, then button 6 (the menu button on the steering wheel) until the settings menu is displayed.

Ive tried pushing each button individually, then together, then holding down for quite a long time - and still no settings menu! Im wondering if im just a retard, or maybe the menu button is broken? The OK button works fine in scrolling through the other displays.

    Thanks heaps!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only works for people with a full height MFD, not the half height? Do you know which yours is?

If yours does happen to be a half height any dealer should be able to do the coding you want, or if you ask on the forums some members have the equipment at home to make the changes for you.

      Ahhh, that could explain it....

I have the non Sat nav one....page 11 of booklet 3.1, fig 8, the one on the right. Ie. non sat nav with DSG, and I have the selector lever position running vertical on the RHS of the display.

So if I dont have the full one, the menu button on the steering wheel doesnt do anything?

It will change from the trip computer, to audio controls, etc but won't show the convenience menu.

Ahhh...I knew there had to be a reason.

Yeah I have the half MFD.

With the settings button on the wheel, how does it change the controls from audio and trip computer...do I have to hold it down? Mine appears to do nothing! I have the factory ipod cable installed as well, not sure if this makes a difference?

The up and down buttons seem to change the trip computer display...does this mean they could control audio track numbers instead?

Back to the settings menu...so as I have the half MFD I cant access the settings/convenience and would have to take it somewhere for the codes to be changed?

          Thanks

I've got the full MFD in my car, so haven't really played around with the half, sorry. I only know about the menu availability thing from previous research. With mine, single quick pressing the menu button will change from trip computer, to audio menu, to convenience settings. I'm not sure what yours will do sorry. If yours can change to show the audio menu then you can change tracks with the up and done.

Yeah to get the settings changed you'll need to either visit a dealer or contact a forum member that might be able to help. Maybe start a thread on here asking for someone local to you with VAGCOM. There is a register on vwgolf.net.au or golfmkv.com of VAG by location, I can't seem to find it atm though.

              Thanks xc17ed,

Anyone also with the half MFD shed any light on the matter?

Im hoping if the settings button on the steering wheel is broken, ill be able to bring it up with the dealer whilst it's still under warranty, and have it replaced....so if anyone with the half MFD knows whether the button on the steering wheel actually does anything, let me know! Pushing mine seems to do absolutely nothing!

              Thanks

Mate sorry to tell you but you cant access any settings with a Half MFD. Mines the same and its a real pain in the backside. Anything you want to change like coming home lights or mirrors need to be done with a Vag com or if you take it into your local vw dealer they will do it free of charge.

I dont really know which button you mean by "menu"

Im guessing you mean the top left button in this pic (excuse the crappy phone pic)

Sorry bad news again, that button is useless just like the one on the other side for bluetooth (For those who dont have BT optioned). Seriously Vw could have easily used these buttons for other simple things like "skip track"..

Yeah that's the button I was referring to. Yeah you'd think they would use them for something else, rather than just leaving them there. I wish the up and down buttons could be used to skip tracks rather than just scrolling through the MFD menus.

I just popped into VW Chatswood and they wanted to charge 30mins labour to log into the computer to see if the reversing mirror tilt coding is there! Anyone have one of these computers?

Your mirrors wont tilt unless you also have electric memory seats. (Uses same module)

Anyone know if you can purchase the full MFD from VW and get them to install it? I'd like to use the functionality of the convenience menu without having to go to VW every time to change settings.

What do you really need to change regularly? Its really a set and forget thing
