  • R32 Questions

Hey team. Looking at buying an R32 soon and have a couple of questions that are pretty much generic Golf questions really.

Q1. What is the difference as far as rear passenger room with a 3 door and a 5 door? Most of my driving is just myself and or the wife, but once a year I need to get a baby capsule or child seat in the back. Could this be done with a three door?

Q2. Has anyone heard of problems with the DSG gearbox after it gets a bit of mileage up? Once I get my R32 I will have it for a long time. So are there going to be any advantages in going for a manual or do DSGs last just as long?

Q3. Does anyone have a sweet R32 that they want to sell me?

Well thanks for the overwhelming response guys and girls. I will now use all these awesome responses to help me determine what sort of R32 I’ll buy.

The space is the same but the two extra doors will help esp since you have a child. I'd choose the 5DR in your case - access to the rear seats to hook up a baby capsule is MUCH easier. (I own both a 3DR MKV GTI and 5DR MKV GT)

Q2. Has anyone heard of problems with the DSG gearbox after it gets a bit of mileage up? Once I get my R32 I will have it for a long time. So are there going to be any advantages in going for a manual or do DSGs last just as long?

There have been cases of mechatronic failures but VW has sorted them under warranty. Best to get one with remaining warranty and buy extended warranty for it (about $1200 from Jamil at Denlo)

Q3. Does anyone have a sweet R32 that they want to sell me?
Check carsales.com.au. Many fine examples on sale there. Good Luck!

Thanks Triode. The wife has just rung me to tell me she has sold our Liberty! So I'm looking flat out for my new ride. None in Tassie, so I'll have to fly up to Victoria next week.

hi mate, i had my MK4 R32 for 3.5 years now and i have a 4 year old monster
I have never had a problem with space or doors. Should be even easier with MK5s since the seats are not so thick and you have more access to the back.
dont get a dsg, get a manual. If she only drives and auto, teach her. I have heard stories (on this forum too) that these are not good.

Pity, there was an immaculate one for sale in Tasmania just last week. I remember seeing it and thinking wow that was one well looked after R32. it was only driven on weekends and still looked like it came from the new car showroom.
If you and your wife don't mind driving a manual I'd go the manual - I've heard too many stories about DSG's - even the new mk6's are having issues every now and then whereas the six speed is pretty much bulletproof and so nice to use.

Yeah I missed that R32 down here, it looked as sweet as. Got the green light from the Minister of Finance just as it went. The Minister is fine with a manual and you guys have me leaning that way. Have been reading a few horror stories in this forum and this will be a long term machine, so if the DSG goes I'll be up for a big spend. A lot more than a clutch replacement anyway.

54k on mine, and love the DSG. Currently have an Audi on order, with their version of it.

A few people here praising their DSG's which is expected but unfortunatelly there's also a lot that have had problems with theirs but how many people here have had issues with their 6 speed? I think its safe to assume that the manual would be more reliable and the DSG.

in that case...buyer beware. Car manufacturers are fitting vehicles with rubber round objects which have a propensity to go flat and render forward motion of the vehicle difficult, until a repair/replacement has been completed.

And...there are more happy owners with good DSGs, than there are those who have experienced issues, which, in the main, have been fixed/replaced under warranty.
