  • Changing over the steering wheel for a GTi unit

I'm going to try and and replace my standard GT steering wheel for a GTi Steering wheel and was wondering if anyone knows of a DIY guide on the internet?

    Hi try this

    VWVortex.com - DIY: Multi-Function Steering Wheel Retrofit

I am in the middle of changing my 2009 Jetta steering wheel to a MK6 GTi steering wheel. I have taken everything out as per above DIY. I used a T55 Torx bit to take out the steering wheel bolt. Thats the only thing I did differently.

These are the additional parts required for the full install.

    The mk 6 C/C stalk has part number 1K0 953 513 G
Steering column controller is part number 1K0 953 549 CH.
The slip ring needs to be the C revision 1K0 959 653

I found that the 2009 Jetta had the required c/c stalk and slip ring already so I only had to ordered the controller.

Mine should be a simple changeover because I've got an Mk5 GT and changing over to an Mk5 GTi so hopefully no need for any extra's. I wanted the Mk6 wheel quite badly ( so jealous ! ) but because I had to buy the airbag plus the stalk, steering controller and the slip ring it would have been far too expensive once you add all the parts together.

The only thing I think I might have problems with is the multifuction buttons on my wheel look like a newer version than the wheel I've got from the GTi, maybe I can change them over?

Do you have any pics? I thought the buttons where the same unless your GTi wheel is a US version maybe?

To be safe I would swap the buttons and wiring harness over from your GT if the buttons are different.

My GT has buttons that look like this ( The buttons are seperate from the surround -

Whereas the GTi Wheel looks like this ( buttons and surround seem to be one piece )

Do you think its possible to just transplant the buttons?

Ah I see the style of the buttons are different I was thinking you had completely different symbols or functions on your buttons. Just use a torx bit on that silver screw to the left of the menu button. It will come away unplug it and transplant it to the GTI one. Do the same on the other side.

            Cheers

Managed to change over the GT steering wheel to the GTi wheel with no problems. Picked a up cheap 2nd hand one too thanks to the value of the US dollar. GT badge snapped straight in and I was able to use my original buttons. Now does anyone want a perfect condition GT steering wheel with GTi badge?
