  • help - fitting of rubber seals on windscreen edges

    hi all

If you get a chance, could you guys please take a look at your own GTIs (or any GOLF V for that matter), and please let me know how the outside rubber seals on the left and right ends of the windscreen sit?

as marked by the arrow on this photo

Do the rubber strips rest at the edge of the glass (like the section above the arrow), or are they resting ON the glass (like the section below the arrow)?

I'm trying to see if mine are correctly installed (in my quest to reduce wind noise). They were resting on the edge of the glass, but I felt that they were too soft in that position, and was wondering whether airflow might deform them...causing wind noise!

    please let me know

    thank you

Easy way to check to see where wind noise is coming from is to use some 100mph tape* and tape over different sections until the windnoise stops. Doesn't take long and instead of guessing you can identify the area where the noise is coming from.

*aka duct tape, cloth tape etc......

it's a funny noise... not typical wind hiss that you get from door seal leaks, but a general 'roar' that seems to emanate from across the windscreen from exactly 100kmh...

For now just want to check that the rubber seals are correctly in position...just wish I had another GTI nearby to compare with

There should be part of the rubber beside the window and part in front.

The best way to describe this is that it looks like an "L" with the top of the "L" in between the glass and panel ... and the "_" of the "L" about 2cm from the glass.

        Hope this makes sense...

i went around looking at all the used Golf V in my dealer, and the majority (but not all) did have the rubber resting next to the edge of the windscreen, not on the front of the windscreen glass.

However one of them had part of the rubber resting next to, and part on the front of the glass!

I'm trying mine on the front to see if it makes any diff to the wind noise...doesn't seem to make it worse at least!

          cheers

Top pic is how my R32 came in 2008. Under the glass.

              thanks bazzle

btw, did your car come standard with auto-rain-closing, or is it something you could program in later?

              cheers

I programmed it in using the Inst from Mavericks site and from the MKV site.
