To a non-car enthusiast I have to admit that they do look very similar.

I'll just be garbbing my coat and leaving....
MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.

Really? Person I find the R32 and Jetta fronts more similar, the huge thing popping in your face is the big chrome centre then same lining on the sides of the centre VW badge whereas the GTI has a black finish, with honeycomb surrounding and iconic red lip that the GTI has?

In all fairness, I love the VR6 engine (my favourite being the MK4 R32). The majority of people who back the R32 over the GTI in this debate is that a) it sounds better b) awd = superior grip c) it sounds better therefore it's more exclusive being top of the range. When it comes down to it the R32 became superseded by the 2.0T for a reason, fuel consumption and emissions, not only that they managed to bring the weight down and extract more power.

To the person/people who said AWD gives you better traction, better acceleration and/or overtaking speeds... that's just completely wrong. AWD is better for getting yourself off the line and that's probably about it, around the corners it doesn't give you 'more' grip it just allows for less 'slip'. Being AWD there's a much higher drive train loss so at the end of the day in a real world overtaking solution I'm pretty sure the GTI is exactly the same as the R32. As for more safety when driving in the wet, why would you be driving fast enough in the wet for your car to lose traction anyway... that's just silly.

I'm sure the Holden and Ford V8 purists can still tell you that their pushrod V8 is the end all of cars, less technology and still producing huge amounts of power and still getting that V8 grunt that no other engine can achieve even though now asian and european cars are drastically reducing their engine sizes. There will always be two sides to the debate as people are starting to get wrapped up defending their car too much. The OP basically just asked which is a better choice to buy and instead of giving positive comments on the corresponding models we're actually putting down others... great forum we have here guys.

Which will hold its value better - Pirelli or R32?

With the impending release of the Scirocco R in 2012, I'd definitely look at getting one in 2014/15.

However, I would like to get something this year that will tide me over until at least then but won't depreciate into nothing.

Looking through your post and thread history, you've been asking roughly the same question since Oct 2010. You've asked about the MkV vs MkVI GTIs vs R32.

Isn't it about time you did a bit of your own research and made up your own mind about things? Asking questions like these only go so far.

Just a check of Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au will give you an idea of the current resale value of both cars in question.

Theyre both going to depreciate significantly. If you want a car that wont then buy a cheaper car. Something 5 years + old.
Or alternatively buy the car you want to drive knowing its going to cost you money. Enjoy it for a few years instead of worrying about how much you could have saved if u had have purchased something else.

              This.

Cars cost money, always. Even I know that and I'm only 21. 2 completely different cars. Drve em both. Buy the one you like more, suck it up and enjoy them for what they are. Not a hard concept?

Are you going to change your name after you know which one to get?

both are very nice cars. all depends what you plan on doing to it in the time of ownership. if you are good to it it will hold value. if you treat the road like its your personal racetrack, and treat the car like crap, it will be worth a lot less.

i placed my order for my golf r just on a month ago, i know the car will cost a pretty penny, but i know its the right car for me.

                  exactly.

Since the arrival of our 6R Polo in December, our .:R has had a well earned break. Last week I filled it up for the 3rd time this year. And FWIW, I am no longer on a salary that really supports this car. But it's a 'loss' I and my wife are prepared to sustain for the foreseeable future, at least until we are prepared to activate "Operation Grey Nomad".

In the meantime....I'll enjoy that V6 note and the flirting glances of those who know what the DBPE MKV is.

Lastly....FFS, make a decision, OP, and get on with enjoying your Golf (whichever it may be).

And to answer your question.......I reckon the R32 would hold it's value better than the 'relli. Simply because there are so many 2.0lt Turbo models in the Golf range ....it must be confusing for a first time VW owner.

                    • Agreed. Just make a decision. I've merged several of your threads together. It's been 6 months already, if you don't know by now, you should maybe just be looking at something like Stalker suggested
