66% failure rate - if that is true then it's not really worth not even $500!

Ummmm.... I bought a unit around 8 months ago on fleebay advertised with a location in Lithuania, dude was very helpful and funnily enough was recommended by a very long serving forum member on here who has bought quite a few units off him before....

Only issue I had was with the VAGCOM coding that took a few tries to work on my MY09 Mk 5 GTi... But worked a treat in the end with full integration thanks to George at VW Village!!

With my limited googling I did find some bits and pieces about stolen units making the rounds in Europe, not good at all especially if mine is in fact a hotty!!!

Just wish VW aus dealers would get a little real with their spare parts or aftermarket parts pricing...

Parallel importing is a nasty thing for local businesses but the reality is that Consumers will always want a better deal, after all we work hard for our $$$$...

That my 2 cents worth on the subject...

Oh and I love my RNS!!!!!

How does one persons failure rate have anything to do with purchase price. In fact how does the failure rate determine the items value at all?

The failure rate on RNS 510's across the board is maybe at most a few percent in line with all of Volkswagen's head units.

You'd like them to sell at a loss? Volkswagen Australia in conjunction with Volkswagen set the parts pricing and a fair component of the pricing has to do with our location in the world, the low volume of sales and the high cost of doing business in Australia.

How is buying "refurbished" units from a private seller in any way related to parallel importation?

The units sold by Volkswagen in Australia come in a box with a code card, manual, WARRANTY, Australian maps and are BRAND NEW.

Parallel importation is the act of importing an identical item from any overseas market and reselling this at a price lower than local prices. A "refurbished item" of suspect origin does not equal a brand new product direct from the manufacturer.

He asked me to supply a parts number as he cant find one listed ?
The part number will be (or similar to) 282 552 RN5 20. The title of the manual is 3.4 RNS 510 Navigation System. Price I paid was $22 and arrived overnight from Sydney.

VW dealers selling at a loss???? cmon now.. I work for a multi national.... there is no way a HU like the RNS as sophisticated as it is would cost anymore than $1000 to make, all components sourced from ASIA, so then a price of $3600 from a dealer is fair?????

Anyway this was just my personal opinion as limited as it might be...

Yes, I've seen the dealers buy price from Volkswagen for the RNS 510 and there is very little in it for them. You forget that the dealers don't set the prices nor do they decide what they will pay Volkswagen but instead they are given two buy prices (depending on when they order it - immediate shipping or as part of their monthly order) and a RRP.

I work for a multi national.... there is no way a HU like the RNS as sophisticated as it is would cost anymore than $1000 to make, all components sourced from ASIA, so then a price of $3600 from a dealer is fair?????
The screen itself is in the order of $5-600, price up daylight readable LCD touch screens for automotive use. Also check the price of the hard drive which is designed for automotive use. And there is a little thing called R&D which is ongoing and costs a hell of a lot, plus all the testing to ensure compatibility across a wide range of platforms whilst introducing new features.

And the cost of providing maps which varies from $2-500 depending on the country.

Buying the RNS 510 from the factory with the car is a ~$2500 option which is removing the stock head unit which is over $1000. So $3600 is about right considering you still have your factory head unit that you can easily sell on, our market size, our tax regime and so on and so forth.

I paid over $3000 for my RNS 510 when they were first released and I'd do it again, the head unit is well worth the money (of course getting it cheaper is better but for the purposes of the post above you need to compare apples to apples)

Anyway this was just my personal opinion as limited as it might be...
                Ditto.

This is the best video ive seen on how to remove your old head unit in a mark V Golf very instructive, even though they installed a pioneer unit .

Also you can buy direct from a VW dealer a RNS 510 for only $1699 a lot less than it would cost the Australian VW owner .

That's in the USA for a US spec unit. Also note that the GTI is half the price in the USA due to the volumes they sell.

It says $1799 on the order page when you click on the link, add on customs and gst and there is another $300 plus shipping at $100 and the purchase of Australian maps at $4-500 and the additional amount for purchasing a European unit $$$$ and you're on the wrong side of $3000 and have no local warranty.

I was only stating that in the USA vw owners can buy the RNS 510 cheaper than we can here and that add states it can be picked up with out postage .

Pick yours up today is a saying and there is no mention that this is a dealer selling them (which they're not) so the origin of them is unknown (and most likely direct from Europe).

The list price of the RNS 510 unit in the USA is $3399. The cheapest discounted price I've seen is from 1stvwparts.com who ARE a dealer and they sell it for $3111.

As I said lets compare apples with apples.

Hi Maverick, to save some of us the runaround to find this manual for the $22. Are you able to divulge whom in Sydney you purchased yours from so we can also order one? Thanks in advance. And thanks for all the valuable information you have provided to this thread, its most interesting.

I purchased mine from a Brisbane dealer, just give your dealer that part number, they can tell you if there is a newer version and order it in for you.

MY RNS 510 arrived this and running ,with a few drama's
I removed the old unit OK but the FM and analog plugs were different rang VW to see if there was an adapter as the plugs on the RNS 510 C were too close together for the 2 single plugs to fit ,could only sell me a whole new cable?
So i rang Camden GTI and spoke to Golf Loon and he said to bring it over and his tech would fit it for me.
All i can say is what good people they are ,had to cut the sides of the original plugs so both could fit ,reinstalled the whole new unit and coded it to the car , now all turns and information is up on the MDF and every thing is working ,
And the best part is he only charged me for one hour $88 including a discount for being a Watercooled Member
